I am currently running out of space on my SSD and will need to buy one in the next 3 months or so once I can't really clear any more space from this one.
When I come to buy, I will be looking at a reputable brand and will decide price point/size at the time itself. However, as things stand now, is it worth spending the extra money on a current generation SSD or will the previous generation be adequate ? I do nothing but run my OS and programs from it. Even then, nothing is particularly intensive. So no photoshop, video editing or anything like that. WCG runs on another dedicated SSD. |

After many posts and several conversations, if the budget permits go for this one - Here While it's not cheap, it comes highly recommended by OldChap amongst others... It's a good balance of size and the warranty rates it amongst the best for crunching!

Hi vcd683s
----------------------------------------I think that the previous generation of SSD`s enough for normal work. I would look for the price / size ratio. Invest the saved money in other things rather. ![]() ![]() |

Check out the Seagate SSHD Hybrid Drives. I picked up a 1 TB drive and I really like it & the pricing.

Hey Hotmess, thanks for that. With the release of the Samasung 850, the 840 seems to be coming into my price range and I expect things to keep happening like that. I have 1.8gb of my drive at the moment and with a little managing, I can probably make that last about 3 months.
Yoro42 - They are an intriguing proposition, especially for my laptop if I ever need to replace the HD on that. For my desktop, I have 4Tb of conventional drive, so just a SSD will do. |

Apart from a bit more speed and some models having a better warranty, the latest gen ssd's have little to offer.
----------------------------------------If speed were your main aim, it is debatable whether a pair of older (cheaper) drives in raid would be a better fit. If, as you mentioned, intensive use such as cep2 were your goal then you would be limited to very few choices. Drives such as the Seagate 600 pro might be worth considering. For normal use just pick what fits your spending power. Look for deals on such drives as the SanDisk Extreme II if you want great performance across the board (at all load levels) .....almost anything will fit the bill but take a look at a new drive.... OCZ ARC 100, 3yrs warranty @ 20GB/day pretty damn quick and cheap too. ![]() |

This SSD will only be running my OS and programs, not Boinc. So I need something fast for loading programs and for using my computer everyday.
I bought a 60gb SSD 3 years ago and I am more than happy with it's speed, but the space is running out, so just need an economical one with more space. Since using an SSD as my boot up, I don't think I can ever go back to HDD. My question was basically, is it worth going for a last generation SSD to save myself some $$$$? Or must I go for the current generation? |

what do u get from fast bootup OS?
----------------------------------------not much, if u work with computers like me - 24/7... I use SSD on work...yes, it's quick! but wouldn't wanna pay the x2 the money for the 1/2 of the space...so using only HDD with Boost technology... but, as u ask about it...I noticed some guys that use SSD say that they got problems with data...after some years of use, SSD dies out...without any warning (unlike HDD, where noise is one of the warnings)... so you better find some RAID0 config that u can use in slightly larger SSD than 60GB... Also, u can put BOINCDATA on some other HDD/USB flash/SDcard...that would help with some space! ;) |

I'm assuming you mean RAID-1 (where you can have a disk in the mirror fail and still keep the array), as opposed to RAID-0 (where a single disk-failure results in full loss)? ![]() |
