I'm not from the US, so don't have a congressperson, but this is a global fight and I don't see why they shouldn't pay some attention to the rest of us too, if there was some way to make our voices heard.

Dear Mgruben, vlado101, and Apis Tintinnambulator,
Thank you very much for wanting to respond to the "call for action" at the end of the progress update!! I thought about this a lot, and I got some help from an expert on advocating for science funding and policy = Lynn Marquis, the Director of the non-profit "Coalition for the Life Sciences". I met Lynn when I went to a "Capitol Hill Day" event that she organized for the CLS. During that Capitol Hill Day last May, I met with the staff of several members of Congress, in order to explain my research and World Community Grid, and I tried to encourage them to fight for increased funds for the NIH and NSF. I also got to meet Senator Cory Booker! See the photo at: http://njms.rutgers.edu/departments/labs/freundlich/gallery.cfm And now back to business: the Coalition for the Life Sciences has webpages with information on how to contact your member of Congress, advice on what to say in that letter or e-mail, and advice on writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Check out the helpful info. at: http://capwiz.com/jscpp/home/ In addition to contacting your Congressperson, it would be great if some of you could write Letters to the Editor about the need to increase funding for the NIH. We need to inspire and mobilize tens to hundreds of thousands (to millions) of people to care about this issue and to vote in primary and general elections based upon it! We especially need to clean the House!! Funding for scientific research needs to be restored to the pre-sequester levels, and then it needs to be increased, so that we can advance the treatment and prevention of the diseases that keep growing in frequency and severity, in the U.S.A. and throughout the world. In addition, well-validated scientific conclusions should help guide policy decisions---they should not be willfully ignored. Please show that you care about these issues by voting in the upcoming elections and by motivating your friends and colleagues to do so, as well. Thank you very much for your support and your help, Dr. Alexander L. Perryman |

The stock message has some block-replacement of apostrophes and EM-dashes when viewed on my iPhone, but other than that was exactly what I was looking for.

I have followed the link to the CLS and in the section: http://capwiz.com/jscpp/issues/alert/?alertid=63296631&PROCESS=Take+Action There is a section that states Issues. From your experience is there a correct entry in that drop down menu? I am split between Budget and Health. Or is that something that depends state by state basis and there is really no correct answer? Thanks PS: I have completed that application under Budget and just wanted to see if others faced the same issue. |

Received reply:
----------------------------------------Dear [mgruben]: Thank you for contacting me regarding medical research and federal discretionary funding for health care. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on these matters. I believe we must continue our strong history of medical research in order to discover effective treatments and improve the health of Americans. Our nation’s commitment to research and development demonstrates our resolve to understand and combat diseases, such as cancer, and other health conditions. Researchers are developing treatments more effectively than was conceivable only a few years ago, and we must ensure that America stays at the forefront of research and development. In order to achieve this goal, we must also encourage the leveraging of private dollars for research efforts. As you know, entities such as the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are charged with allocating federal research dollars toward research and initiatives that will advance prevention and successfully treat diseases and health conditions. I believe Congress plays an important role in overseeing the distribution of these monies and must ensure they are wisely spent. With respect to federal funding of research, the Senate Appropriations Committee has primary jurisdiction over the annual appropriations bills that allocate federal spending. While I do not sit on that committee, you may be certain that I will keep your suggestions in mind regarding how federal funding is allocated as I work to ensure that all Texans are well served. I appreciate having the opportunity to represent Texas in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Sincerely, JOHN CORNYN United States Senator |

Got this as a reply:
----------------------------------------Dear [vlado101]: Thank you for taking the time to write to me about the importance of biomedical research. I rely on the input of engaged New Jerseyans like you when making decisions, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Federal support for biomedical research improves public health, encourages innovation, and fuels our economy. Our state is the leader in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and has the highest density of scientists of any place in the world. Through public investments in biomedical research, New Jersey advances knowledge and technology that drive new medical breakthroughs. After months of gridlock, I voted for a budget agreement that sets government spending levels through fiscal years 2014 and 2015 and reduces our deficit by approximately $20 billion. This agreement includes a $1 billion increase to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and includes a $287 million increase to the National Science Foundation (NSF) compared to fiscal year 2013, sequester levels. While the budget is far from perfect and there are several provisions I would like to see modified, I supported the agreement because it marks a vital step in our efforts to protect important domestic programs, like research and development, while also addressing our deficit challenges. The funding should allow the NIH and the NSF to continue all current research programs and begin new research studies and trials. As your Senator, I will continue to support public investments in scientific research. Again, thank you for writing to me. I am honored to represent you in the United States Senate, and I value what I hear from New Jerseyans about the issues our state and nation face. Please continue to keep in touch with your thoughts and concerns. For more information on my work in New Jersey and in Washington, please visit my website at booker.senate.gov. Sincerely, Signature Cory A. Booker United States Senator |

Got another response from one of my representatives:
---------------------------------------- Dear Mr. vlado101: Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I appreciate hearing from you on this critical issue and having the opportunity to respond. You will be pleased to know that I strongly support funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). On January 17, 2014, the President signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2014 (P.L. 113-76) into law, funding the federal government through the rest of the current fiscal year. Specifically, this law provides the NIH with nearly $30 billion in overall funding, allowing it to continue supporting critical medical research, helping us to find cures and treatments for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. While this funding level represents a $1 billion increase over the last year, it is still below the funding provided to the NIH prior to the start of the "sequestration" in 2013. As such, I remain concerned about the long-term impacts underfunding the NIH might have on our ability to achieve medical breakthroughs and improve our overall health. In order to voice my support for fully funding the NIH I sent a letter to the Senate Committee on Appropriations and Subcommittee of Labor, Health, and Human Services requesting that they maintain a strong funding commitment in the appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2015. Like you, I understand the importance of investing in potentially life-saving research and believe that budgets should be a reflection of our values. Rest assured, I will continue to keep your views in mind as I continue working to provide the NIH with the resources it needs. At least someone is responding to the emails. Hopefully others will get emails or letters from their state representatives for crunchers that live in the US. |

Dear vlado101, Mgruben, and everyone else who contacted their Congresspeople,
THANK YOU very much for taking the time to encourage our elected officials to do the right thing and fund science!! Since today is election day, I now have another request: please go out and vote, and try to convince as many of your friends and family members to vote, as well! Best wishes, Dr. Alex L. Perryman |
