Re: GO Fight Against Malaria project update, July 2014

Hi Falconet,

Thank you very much. I'm glad that you appreciated it.

I hope we get funding for the project, too. We recently found out about two of our applications for funding. Thus far, our grant applications were not approved, but we'll keep trying.

Best wishes,
Dr. Alex L. Perryman

Hi Tony,

Thank you very much. And you're welcome.

The results have been very promising so far, and we've only begun to scratch the surface. We'll keep mining the data and searching for other promising new hits against malaria and tuberculosis.

Cheers,
Dr. Alex L. Perryman

Re: GO Fight Against Malaria project update, July 2014

Hi vlado101,

You're welcome.

We have a ton of results that we still need to analyze (over a billion of them). And we need to obtain some grant funding to support the project (to pay for personnel, computers, and the compounds that we'll need to order and then test in wet lab experiments). It'll be a while before we think about starting phase 2 of the project. But there are many other projects that need your help now. Keep crunching.

Cheers,
Dr. Alex L. Perryman

Hi douglasalt1,

You're welcome. We have already identified several promising new hits against two different types of targets, and we're currently performing additional experiments and trying to improve them.

Drug-resistant TB is a terrible plague, and now it's not just cursing the developing world. Extensively drug-resistant TB has spread to over 92 different countries, including the U.S.A.

Thank you for your interest and your support,
Dr. Alex L. Perryman

Hi gb009761,

You're welcome. I'm glad that you enjoyed the abundant text. ;) You're right, there are several promising avenues that we need to explore further.

Thank you very much. Our grant applications haven't been successful yet (less than 10% of applications are funded these days). But we'll keep trying.

Best wishes,
Dr. Alex L. Perryman

Good evening Apis_Tintinnambulator,

Thank you very much! There were a lot of areas that I needed to cover in the update. I'm glad that it was still readable. I appreciate the feedback.

Thank you very much for your interest and your support!

Hi Erika,

Thank you very much for helping to spread the good news!

Before I sign out for the night, I need to also give special thanks to:
Maria Penzo and Professor Mike Blackman for testing the candidate compounds against PfSUB1; Weixuan Yu and Professor Peter J. Tonge for testing the first set of candidate compounds against InhA from Mycobacterium tuberculosis; and Xin Wang, Mi-Sun Koo, Pradeep Kumar, Shao-Gang Li, Steve Paget, Professor David Alland, and Associate Professor Joel S. Freundlich for testing and helping to advance the development of the second set of candidate compounds against InhA and for making the Rutgers University-New Jersey Medical School a great place to continue performing research against drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Best wishes,
Dr. Alex L. Perryman

Dr. Perryman,

I request that you or someone in your lab draft a petition or form letter that people on the World Community Grid could sign / send to their Congresshuman, much like the Planetary Society does frequently.

Because I want your NIH funding restored, and I want to be effective in articulating that.

I second that. If one can be made I would at least send it to see if maybe some funding can be brought to this project.
