Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

It might not be long until it is cheaper to buy a few of these for crunching than a desktop system. 4500 - 5000 ppd at 4.5w each for $81 would be pretty good. You can tell they are getting a free OS from Microsoft and Intel are giving them a subsidy.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

I switched my Z3740 from MCM to UGM (when it started) and its RAC has risen from 750 to 1050. It also measures 5 watts at the wall as opposed to 4 when running MCM or FAAH. I don't know if UGM runs well on all Bay Trail devices but it was a nice surprise for me.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

guys, forget about atoms...they do 15+h of work for MCM, FAAH or UGM...so they r TOO SLOW!
only thing that they r good for is the "pumping days into project"! ;)

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

I have an Nvidia Tegra Note 7 with 4 ARM A15 cpu cores (Tegra 4) running WCG grid too. I couldn't use all 4 cores this summer as the battery overheated and WCG stopped but I am able to run it on 3 cores at 100%. My device statistics are:

11/09/2014 08:03:01 0:096:07:10:58 194,645 675

I think this may be greater than the Intel Z3740 but it is definitely using more power since I have an 11W solar panel that I run it from when sunny and it can't run the 3 cores at 100% but 2 cores at 80%. I'd say it is closer to 8W.

From memory, it benchmarked WCG at approx 1/2 performance of my Intel G1610 desktop CPU so these small tablets/laptops (even smartphones) are becoming pretty powerful.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

Thanks for the info doive1231,

My Z3740 is now at:
1:140:10:32:31 716,112 1,164
Plugging into my spreadsheet using 5 watts (although most of its life has been at 4) it comes out to 161 BOINC ppd/watts.

Your A15 Tegra using 3 cores at 8 watts:
0:096:07:10:58 194,645 675
Comes out to 108 BOINC ppd/watts. Using 4 cores and 11 watts it is at 105.

If I didn't make any mistakes the Z3740 at 161 is more efficient than a Tegra A15 at 108.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

Two points to note about using tablets and smartphones is:

1. I've only ever seen my tablet process FightAIDS@Home - VINA tasks so they may not participate in the full range of tasks.

2. The screen has become discoloured where the CPU is so I think that the heat from it may have done this. It is not extremely noticeable but the close proximity of the CPU to the screen could affect devices.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

I should note that my Z3740 always appears to be running at its max turbo of 1800 MHz. Even when running the WCG 100%. This is Windows 8.1 32 bit. I don't know if all Z3000 series devices or all Bay Trail devices will run the WCG at max turbo. Windows says 1300 in one place and 1800 in two other. CPU-Z says 1800.

My Z3740 always runs at 1866mhz while running WCG.
