Re: most efficient CPU (maybe)

OldChap,
I am reluctant to reveal all my hosts but I can give you the latest information from the Z3740:

Total Runtime WCG points Results
0:008:08:26:20 11726 19

Or is there something else I can answer?

FYI Your dual CPU at 248 watts beats my devices combined at 367 watts.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe)

I, too, have Asus Transformer Book T100TA, but I've chosen not to use it for BOINC, because I don't want to wear out the small SSD (it can't be replaced).

However, there is a cheaper alternative, $149, using a Z3745, which is an android version of the Z3740.

Z3740

Z3745

And CPU Mark / Max TDP for the Z3740.

Look at this, incomplete and somewhat incorrect, CPU performance comparison:

http:
//www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=1884&cmp[]=2164&cmp[]=2059

The Z3745 has turbo (burst frequency) just like the Z3740, but here it’s wrongly stated as being not supported, and it has the same 2W TDP. In spite of being identical the Z3745 seems to be somewhat more efficient than the Z3740.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe)

Have you considered running BOINC with the data files on a USB drive?

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe)

I tried to install the BOINC software on a RAM-disk, but it constantly swapped data between the RAM-disk and different files on the C drive, the TEMP file being one of them, so I couldn’t see any performance benefits with this solution. I even moved the TEMP file to the RAM-disk, but the swapping persisted.

There would be less wear and tear on the SSD with this solution, but it wouldn’t eliminate it completely. I think the same goes with a USB stick, unless the C volume is located on the USB stick, but that would probably have a negative influence on the performance.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe)

Almost same experienced as you. I had BOINC software in my computer. It run well for days but now I couldn't see now in my computer.

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe)

@TBMS,

I mentioned a USB drive because they are replaceable which is what I thought you were looking for. But that isn't the point of the thread. And yes, the Z3745 may be slightly more efficient at the WCG than the Z3740. I should have said the Z3000 series. Thank you for the CPUmark chart which confirms what I'm seeing.

@breok,
If you are having a problem running BOINC you may get a better response if you post in a more appropriate forum/thread.

currently at:
Agent Type Device Name Last Results Returned
(UTC) Total Run Time
(y:d:h:m:s) Points
Generated Results Returned
BOINC Z3740 07/07/2014 23:18:42 0:025:12:05:42 32,532 59

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

The chart provided by TBMS:

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/power_performance.html

has been updated today. And if the Z3740 held the throne it wasn't for long in this chart. And although this chart may not accurately reflect WCG efficiency I've updated the title to (maybe not).

I will give a final update with the Z3740s current statistics:

Agent Type Device Name Last Results Returned
(UTC) Total Run Time
(y:d:h:m:s) Points
Generated Results Returned
BOINC Z3740 07/10/2014 14:04:25 0:037:07:13:37 46,424 87

A mixture of FAAH and MCM workunits. No CEP2.

This puts me at 177 which is lower than the 200 I was optimistic about, but still respectable I think. Let me know if you want any more updates.

Cheers

Re: most efficient CPU (maybe not)

I just bought a toshiba encore 8 from ebay for £140 and it is doing pretty well crunching wise. I have so far got over 33000 points from26 days of runtime so i am getting approx 5000 points per day. I thought the device might get hot but it doesn't really. I have been watching netflix through it through the hdmi port quite a lot as well as using it for other things. There is no difference in performance when crunching which i thought was strange but it appears most of the things ai am doing seem to use the gpu

It looks like these are coming down in price. It helps not having the Windows tax on them.
