There is currently an overwhelming demand to impute genotype results from large scale genome studies. Imputation has made a substantial contribution to understanding human genetics, and one day this knowledge will lead to better treatments for all human illnesses.
However, there is no large scale distributed computing project working on imputation. There are freely available imputation programs and dividing up the tasks for a distributed project would not be difficult. Such a project would be especially useful for developing nations that might not have well developed computer infrastructure. It would also help the many individuals with genotype results that were interested in having their results imputed. I do not want to write up this project idea, though I would be very interested in hearing from others on the forum for their input. Might the World Community Grid consider helping humanity decipher the genetic basis of human illness through an imputation project? |

WCG do NOT write programs, they only run them for outside scientists

If any scientists want to study this on WCG, they need to apply.

The programs for genome imputation have been written and are freely available.
For example, Impute2 and Beagle. There already is an overwhelming scientific demand for imputation. There have been over 10,000 GWAS published. However, there is no large scale distributed computing program that is currently devoted to this task. The WCG could provide the computing power to help the scientists running the imputations. In addition, scientists must now have the technical know how to run the programs, a WCG project would simplify the task for them. If the WCG provided this service, then there would almost certainly be an overwhelming demand from the scientific community. The proposal could be written on behalf of the scientific organizations that would demand the service. |

Scribe, What I meant was that it does not manage any, it isn't responsible for it (aside from the technical aspect and that9 :D

The scientific community are not the only ones interested in imputation.
There are 1 million ordinary citizens that have been genotyped and would benefit from genetic imputation. I have been in contact with an Alzheimer disease forum. Members of this forum (some of whom are carriers of APOE epsilon 4/4 and will almost certainly develop late onset Alzheimer's dementia) expressed great enthusiasm for an imputation project. These people and many more around the world are citizen scientists. They are trying to determine what genetic mistake will make them ill and try to develop a treatment to prevent it. The World Community Grid's mission is to provide help for such people. Might the World Community Grid create a project to directly help people do genetic imputation? |

WCG Fixed for you AFAIK, there are lot of conditions to be met by project prior to its inclusion into WCG Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Might the World Community Grid create a project to directly help people do genetic imputation? We keep telling you!!!! WCG does NOT create projects. The projects have to come to WCG, why do you refuse to listen?????? |

Impute,
----------------------------------------The WCG does not create projects. Researchers do. If you know anyone doing research in this area, let them know about the WCG.
