CEP2 Timeline graphic

The new CEP2 timeline graphic on the CEP2 project oage (and the SekeRob dashboard) gives a clear visual indication that the project is (supposedly) in it's final stages. This runs contrary to previous statements by cleanenergy The Clean Energy Project Scientist e.g.
We are constantly generating new and exciting molecules for investigation - since chemical space is so large, there are always more we could investigate. The challenge we are facing at the moment is working out the best places to focus our search - a nice problem! So to answer your question, there is no fixed end date because we are creating new ones all the time, giving us (and you!) the best chance of making a truly exciting discovery! Feb 12 2014

What is the "official" position? Is CEP2 really expected to finsh in 3-4 months? Welcome though the new graphic display is, the information must be clear and unambiguous.

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

I'm missing the links, and the wherewithal to search for the posts, but my hearsay is that CEP2 will continue as long as IBM and Harvard like each other , since CEP2 can continue to generate additional meaningful work sets, and since WCG is ok with that

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

As Mgruben points out what we have is hearsay which is at odds with the WCG generated graphic.

Clarification is needed.

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

The timeline WCG provides would be based on the current total remaining CEP work units. However, the wonderful project scientists add new libraries of work units based on previous results whenever the current set starts to run low. So unless the WCG admins manually change it, we'll likely see the timeline for CEP get close to finishing then shoot back up every few months (or however often they add a new library of molecules).

So would that mean that it would become CEP3 or CEP4 after they upload those new work units? Or would they just keep us crunching under CEP2 all the time?

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

I'd be very surprised if this then became CEP3 - as, by the sounds of it, it's very similar to the way FA@H is being run (more WU's being created off the back of the results we're returning, as new findings are discovered).

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

My understanding from this cleanenergy post is that addition of new libraries will continue under the CEP2 banner for sometime yet.

a CEP3 and a Buffalo spin-off on solar water splitting catalysts will come at some point in the not-too-distant future late 2014, early 2015 maybe?

OK, you let the cat out of the bag... biggrin what in the world is "Buffalo spin-off on solar water splitting catalysts" ? ...
Is "Buffalo" the University of Buffalo? or does it has something to do with the bison that roam around in the grasslands of North America?
"solar water splitting catalysts"... that I had to Google... sounds interesting:

"Although one of the best means of sourcing renewable energy, solar systems cannot consistently produce adequate energy since sunlight varies from time to time and place to place. A solution to this problem is a device that can store energy in the form of hydrogen for later use, offering a consistent output over time with very little pollution.

One of the most sustainable methods of producing hydrogen is photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting. Solar energy is used to break water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called "hydrogen evolution reaction." This reaction requires a catalyst, which is a chemical agent that increases its speed. In PEC water-splitting devices, a common catalyst used to split water is platinum, which is deposited on the surface of the solar panel's photocathode -- the solar panel's electrode that converts light into electric current."

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

Here's a more recent post , saying that the project is more or less open-ended. I wonder if the WCG techs putting an estimated end date was an error or a miscommunication. You'll notice that the AIDS project still shows a percentage (assumedly for the work remaining on current targets) but no "end" date. The same goes for MCM, though I'm not terribly familiar with the strategy for that project.

Re: CEP2 Timeline graphic

Ok, so here are how things are calculated form our end.

The research scientists tell us how many batches they are planning on running through World Community Grid. (estBatches). There are a few more values we use like batches completed and batches in progress (compBatches). As well as the rate of which results are being completed over a 30 day average (rate).

(estBatches - compBatches) / rate = numDays.

If numDays > 6 months, we don't display the date. If it is less, then we go back to the researchers to ask them for an updated batch count or if the project is really set to complete.

Again, these are just estimates, and they change based off a script that estimates them daily.

Hope this helps a bit more on the explanation of things on our end.

Thanks,
-Uplinger
