I am motivated by my love of science teaming up with my computer hobby to solve issues that hit very close to home. I have 1 netbook, one gaming laptop, a nexus 7, HTC one, and one tower running. So far I have been able to recruit my mother, 2 teachers, and I am currently trying to recruit my school district.

What motivated me to really participate was the fact that I never turned my computer off during the night time anyway, and during the day unless I was gaming, the computer still wasn't doing anything anyway. So, it made sense to me to have it do some research for the benefit of humanity while I wasn't using it to its fullest potential.
----------------------------------------Reason I went for World Community Grid, is because it covers so many different fields of research in one project, so I can contribute to all of those without even needing to set up different projects. |

First of pure idealism, in the hope that humanity and nature can benefit.

Help to make a better, safer, more healthful world. And the results will be in the public domain, free to be used by all.

Honestly? I have no idea! When I started with SETI in Sept 2004, SETI was getting a lot of publicity (in some areas) and I joined with a group of mates to assist with the 'Search for ET'
Through the years I've supported Climate research, Milkyway and Asteroids as well as SETI. Now I stick mainly to the medical research type of projects, thus I support WCG, Poem, MalariaControl and others like them Why do I stay? Well, I enjoy the challenge of building bigger and better Crunchers, the likes of the 'New Toy, 2 x MegaCrunchers (both well documented on here) and others. I also get the opportunity to reuse some reduntant hardware from several sources, that helps keep the green side of things going... Ultimately, I hope we will help provide a breakthrough in the fight against the many deseases that have blighted humanity for too long... As they say 'Every little helps'! |

I've been with WCG from the beginning, but unfortunately not as consistently as I had wished for. Why participate? I think it's a great way to help science find solutions for the world's pains, either being sickness, ecology, water, etc. It's one of my way of helping mother nature. I don't give a hoot about the points, but I am interested in the number of WUs that I return to WCG. So... let's crunch on for a better future !!!

I am relatively a recent member of WCG. I wish I have heard of this sooner so that I would have been able to start donating much earlier. The reason I joined WCG is that this is a way I can contribute something to help people, and as others have mentioned all the results are public so that they can be improved further.

Having trouble recruiting people, but I'll be adding a fx-6300 cpu next month. 6 cores @ 3.5 Ghz, and a gtx-780 will be used for gpugrid until wcg adds a new gpu project.

I heard about the concept of distributed computing around a decade ago but didn't do any real research into it. About a year ago I remembered it again and took a look. I've always had powerful machines but since I've stopped video editing / gaming they really haven't been put to their real potential and that depressed me.
----------------------------------------Seeing the Gates Foundation supporting Malaria Control and IBM supporting WCG + the number of research papers published by both was enough reason to have me contribute. ![]() |

Watson.
----------------------------------------IBM's donation of $500,000 to The World Community Grid peaked my interest. After visiting the WCG site I became a member and joined Team Multiple Sclerosis. Elementary! ![]() |
