As more people discover e-cigs and begin to use them and refill the cartridges they use, the danger of poisoning, especially for small children, has begun to increase significantly.
----------------------------------------A new study from the CDC has indicated that the number of MONTHLY poison control center calls relating to e-cigs has gone from 1 per month in 2010 to over 200 as of February 2014. A little more than half of these involved children under 5 while a little more than 40% involved people 20 or over. The danger to children is especially acute since a) liquid nicotine bottles are not required to be child proof and b) the liquid often comes in fruit and candy flavors. This may not sound like a serious threat until you consider that newer nicotine products can contain nearly 40 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter. An average cigarette contains between 1 and 2 milligrams of nicotine. Data for this study came from the poison centers that serve the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories. The study examined all calls reporting exposure to conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or nicotine liquid used in e-cigarettes. Poison centers reported 2,405 e-cigarette and 16,248 cigarette exposure calls from September 2010 to February 2014. The total number of poisoning cases is likely higher than reflected in this study, because not all exposures might have been reported to poison centers. ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by twilyth at Apr 7, 2014 3:01:25 AM] |

Agreed. And I forgot to mention that virtually all nicotine comes from China - even if the formulation of the liquid is done domestically.
----------------------------------------So you can't really count on the nicotine and/or liquid being made in accordance with FDA GMP (good manufacturing procedures). There are however brands of liquid that claim to test their products with mass spectroscopy and gas chromatography. There's one brand in the UK that I used to use but I won't mention any names since it could be seen as a commercial endorsement. ![]() ![]() |

One presumes that if they were used 'correctly', that is to wean off cigarettes then they would not be in use with any one person for long. However, increasingly they are being used as the latest 'fad' over here and youngsters are starting on these without ever being on cigarettes.....and in some cases progressing from these onto the 'real' thing!

Well, we should ban cigarettes then, because the avaibilty of cigarettes could lead to the consumption of cigarettes.

Very true Alan. In fact there is recent evidence that supports the idea that e-cigs don't help you quit (although even the study authors have some doubts).
----------------------------------------And the allure of being fashionable and cool is only increased by having kids believe that these things are safe. What people don't often understand is that nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs around. In terms of percentage of people who quit, I think it's more addictive that heroin - but I'd have to double check that factoid. ![]() ![]() |

And because of those experiences, a ban on e-cigarettes is most likely to be called utterly nonsense.

I don't think they'll be banned any more than over the counter nicotine gum or patches.
----------------------------------------The problem is that you can become addicted to those too but at least they're safer than smoking. I think e-cigs will definitely be regulated soon though. Personally I think that is a good thing and long overdue. ![]() ![]() |

I think e-cigs will definitely be regulated soon though. For sure, then various governments the world over can tax it, nice £$€grab for them! I've been using an e-cig for the past 7 years - mainly at work, as when I lock the doors and energise the alarms, I can't go outside for a real smoke. ![]() |
