One private Q: now on one of my computers there is a WinXP SP3, legit version...but after 08.04. Microsoft stops developing updates for vulnerabilities...usually my father pays bills on that computer, so I would need "secure OS"...also I would need some "easy to use" OS...
----------------------------------------What do you suggest for a: -1,4 Tualatin, - 1GB SDRAM, - 40GB EIDE HDD and some - fast AGP? Some type of Linux? Which one? Or some other OS? |

This question is more about usability for the user. Is he pretty computer savvy? Do you plan on teaching him a whole new OS? XP -> 7 isn't too much of a change for people and would still run (but probably slow with that little RAM).
----------------------------------------XP -> any Linux distro is a big change for most people and requires a lot of relearning. If you are comfortable with it and are willing to sit down and make sure he is too, then certainly give it a shot. XP -> Windows 8/8.1 is another large change but can be made less painful with a little tweaking. It also seems to run really well on older hardware. Depending on the versions of software you run, it may even be better for compatibility. My suggestion is that if you don't want to put a lot of time into re-education, stick with Windows. Or possibly even just get him a tablet. My wife did all of our bills on the tablet for a long while before I took the duty back over. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

A quicker crunching on Linux of some projects than on Win, says I should go to Linux... ;)

I actually pick up Ubuntu, as for me. I passed thru Windows 2000 (and had to deal with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8), then KDE3.5, then GNOME2, now using mostly GTK apps with awesome window manager. This last machine I bought with pre-installed Windows 8, found it's the most logic-enabled OS from Microsoft since Windows 2000, and deleted it. Now with awesome@Ubuntu again, installed BOINC for WCG again.
----------------------------------------Also, why not giving him Android/iOS tablet, of course? If only he's not in fond of his old-good machine he's gonna have repaired soon: computer parts inside it likely are going to come out of order, one by one... Linux Mint I didn't try, but can confirm they are Debian -» Ubuntu -» Mint derived. And there are many people who migrate from Debian/Ubuntu to Archlinux, so just burn several LiveCDs and try them yourself. :D [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 8, 2014 11:27:41 PM] |
