Should I upgrade my BOINC?

Hey there World Community Grid!

So, ever since I build my new computer in 2012, I've been using BOINC version 7.0.25(x64). I have read around the forums and seem to remember someone saying that Upgraded BOINC sometimes might break "compatibility" with projects.

I like to keep all my software up to date. I haven't upgraded BOINC because I didn't want to break anything, and two Im a bit lazy.

The only problem I notice with the version I have now is that sometimes the Manager itself (BOINC Manager) will go 100% CPU and crash itself, and I'll have to restart it. It doesn't happen a lot, but its often maybe once every two weeks. I also only turn off my computer every 2-3 weeks for around 10 minutes to clean the dust filters and install updates.

Should I upgrade to the latest version, which happens to be (7.2.42)?

Re: Should I upgrade my BOINC?

Chase, simple answer for me is upgrade. It's an upgrade within version (both V7) and, having run BOINC since the V5 days, upgrades within a version have always been simple, fast and painless. Now, when I upgraded from V6 to V7, I did let my queue run dry, shut down BOINC, install and reboot but that was only the second time I've upgraded versions ( I honestly can't remember upgrading from V5 to V6 though I clearly did). You can browse the Release Notes on the BOINC website to see more about what was changed in BOINC. Scanning that would let you see if anything catches your eye relative to your specific setup. I don't upgrade every time BOINC puts out a new level to the public but I do try to do so at least once a year.
