Questions for WCG Boinc migration from Boinc 7.2.42 64bit

I have installed Boinc 7.2.42 64bit, and I'm considering installing WCG Boinc 7.2.47 , however the "Program directory" and the "Data directory" that the WCG install indicate are not what Boinc .42 uses, also I don't run the Boinc screensaver while Boinc is running.
Would I benefit from running WCG 7.2.47?
I read on the other thread that WCG Boinc has been through a "security review", is this suggesting that the Boinc client is less secure than WCG Boinc?
And how would I migrate from Boinc to WCG Boinc without losing my current WUs?

Re: Questions for WCG Boinc migration from Boinc 7.2.42 64bit

Hello jon_joy_1999,
I don't run the Boinc screensaver while Boinc is running.

Neither do I. I was surprised when the upgrade changed my screen saver choices. So I clicked on Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Change Screen Saver (under Personalization) and changed back to my preferred settings.

WCG 7.2.47 Windows is 32-bit for the most generality. Since all it does is activate / deactivate projects and communicate over the internet, it can run both 32 and 64-bit programs if the CPU can run 64 bit programs but can be installed on 32-bit only computers. (A dying breed, but there are some of them.) If you have been running a non-WCG 64-bit BOINC, then you can set 'No New Tasks' in PROJECTS for WCG on BOINC Manager. Once everything has returned, uninstall the 64-bit BOINC and install the WCG BOINC 7.2.47.

The WCG BOINC version has been debugged by our staff and might be more stable. [There is no secret sauce. They tell all the BOINC developers what they are fixing - but any regular BOINC updates incorporating these fixes might also include new software.] If this is not important to you, go ahead and run whichever BOINC 7.2+ version you prefer. Whether BOINC is 32-bit or 64-bit only affects how it is installed since they can both run all projects at identical speed.

biggrin 64-bit projects should run faster, but BOINC is a simple utility that does not benefit from any speedup.

Lawrence
