Hi Ben, I love the way you think. There is only one main issue that I can see with your idea. I think it will cost retailers a lot of money in Internet bandwidth and they would not be able to technically sell the on floor stock as a new unit because of the CPU will be running under load. All the best with your partition

I think it will cost retailers a lot of money in Internet bandwidth and they would not be able to technically sell the on floor stock as a new unit because of the CPU will be running under load. All the best with your partition These modern businesses have the 30 Mb bandwith required. Truthfully a bussness should be able to afford the price if they can waste money on video screen advertisments. As for the second reason, dont run at load, run below max so the performance isnt hurt. Store shopping of computers consists of internet browsing at most. Nothing worth doing is easy. |

It will never happen.
1) Do you really think the retailers want to pay for the following: a. Additional internet bandwidth i. Your 30Mb statement is way too low; they (Best Buy) have 1495 in the US alone. See how that 30Mb stacks up against say CEP2 ii. Next, the store has a connection back to one or two sites, from there they can get access to the Internet. So even if a store had a 30Mb circuit, it is NOT and Internet circuit. Across the 30Mb circuit, they would have voice and data running across it. While they would have QoS, when a circuit is 100%, it doesn’t fare so well iii. They also want the customer to see how the machine performs, having a saturated Internet circuit shows the customer a poor performing machine 1. Your average customer doesn’t know anything and will think the computer is just slow and not that say BOINC is causing it b. Tech support i. Someone needs to install it and at times, there are client issues c. Running the software will take more than 60w. i. There is more than one machine at each store 1. Additional electrical circuits may need to be added as well ii. You also have to think about cooling in the summer as well d. Running the software will also generate more heat i. That could put a consumer off as they feel the heat either 1. Coming off the machine 2. How hot the machine is 3. The noisy fans e. The machines might be reimaged every night, so any current WU would then be discarded 2) As for video screen advertisements. That doesn’t take any internet bandwidth at all. Ever heard of a think called caching or a proxy? a. This could be updated daily with multiple different ones and could all be updated off-hours 3) Running the software would also be against the corporate computer policies of this companies a. Maybe you should buy some stock and issue a shareholder proposal to change it |

I agree with at least lanbrown's reason 1c. The added electricity cost will put off most businesses. Retail or not. I think. If they could claim the electricity and machine depreciation as a charitable deduction on their taxes it might be easier.
