Dan,
----------------------------------------It's good to hear that we're keeping you busy and we'll happily accept the resultant de-prioritising of the status page update. Occasional interaction with crunching community goes a long way! Your injection of humour is appreciated - most of us would have put "extreme-throughout" down as a typo! ![]() |

Hi Dan,
I 've gone through the FAH site but I could not see any information about the "after math" . I mean there has been more than 100 experiments finished. Project scientists run these outputs thru vigirious tests, but no signs of hope yet? after so many years of computing and "extreme throughput" due to VINA ? After the childhood cancer and Schisophrenic parasites , another sign of hope would be much the needed boost to WCG... Looking forward to the good news.. |

Hello Safak,
----------------------------------------There are two sides to this coin: On one hand, there are a couple sets of candidates, which Alex mentioned in the status pages (years ago?). These studies have had their fair share of obstacles, and I'll speak with Dr. Olson about how much I can divulge in the upcoming quarterly update. On the other hand, I faced at least two great challenges when joining MGL: modifying then current techniques to handle the extreme-input and processing a large amount of existing AutoDock data. Vina had just started for a few months, which started around batches in the 45K's. I have recently created and submitted batches in the 840K's. Further, Vina batches currently each contain 10K dockings compared to AutoDock's 1K dockings. I approximated ~7 billion dockings. Recently, we had a small technical, logistic victory in adjusting our scripts to help process the incoming data on our own cluster at TSRI, Garibaldi. With the help of our HPC staff and Dr. Forli, I was able to process almost 150K batches in the last 2 weeks. (These batches still have to be analyzed.) Bottom line: we hope to propose compounds for our collaborators to test relatively soon, perhaps in months. I hope this clears up the lack of news from me in the last few months. I'm sure we (HIVE, MGL, Crunchers) are all enthusiastic for some "hits"! Thanks, Dan P.S. We will be submitting an update in mid-May to elaborate on more news, and official future updates will be be given quarterly. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 25, 2014 4:38:20 PM] |

Thanks for the update, mgl_DNSantiago.
----------------------------------------Really great that you will now give us quarterly updates! ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

@Safak
----------------------------------------I completely understand your desires to see results especially as this project has existed for multiple years. If nothing came from this work I doubt any of us would be here. Part of solving difficult problems is to find as many of the pieces as possible. To a large degree in the research world the more journal article researchers write the more they are contributing and the more respected they are. The bigger the discovery in the publication, the more respected the journal that prints it is, the more respected the work/researcher(s) is(are). A big part of me joining BOINC was seeing the list of publications that have come from BOINC projects -> Publications_by_BOINC_projects. WCG really stands out in this list as well. First the idea, gathering the resources to test it, testing ideas, finding something worth writing about, writing the article, submitting it, making changes, getting article accepted and published...each step can take months to years to do with some overlap depending. This also explains why some newer/newly finished projects don't have any published work; it takes a lot of time. (can you feel the frustration I have doing an MA program? lol)Considering how long people have been trying to find a cure for AIDS and how much money has been spent fighting it, I doubt this group will say "this is the cure!" (but I'd love to be proved wrong!!). Even if they "only" publish articles and speak at conferences it will be considered successful, but I hear you mate, I'd love for some big breakthrough that can pull other people to this project and others like it! And I'm really stoked they will give quarterly updates now! ![]() |
