System Maintenance Sunday, 9 March

For those not receiving News updates in a timely fashion wink
... maintenance on our website Sunday, 9 March from 2:00 UTC - 8:00 UTC.
However, admins might like to correct the article's title, which incorrectly reads "System Maintenance: Sunday May 9th from 2:00 UTC - 8:00 UTC".
PS The 2 March news article had the same error; who's doing copy and paste without checking? devilish

Re: System Maintenance Sunday, 9 March

Thank you tonyh205 for adding a forum thread highlighting this forthcoming maintenance slot.

Yes, I'm also one (of, what I'm presuming, was many), who received the e-mail notifying us of the last maintenance slot long after it had all been done and dusted...

Thank you for bringing the date error to attention. It has been fixed (both of them).

:)

We are discussing adding a Daily email digest, where members who choose to do so, would receive notification daily of such News posts.

Thanks!

Under Settings, Communication Preferences, check the System Updates box for In-App Notifications and you should receive a Notice in BOINC Manager the same day/next day that WCG creates the News item. My Manager has displayed the last two maintenance Notices the same day it was posted by WCG.

Re: System Maintenance Sunday, 9 March

BobCat13,

If you have that feature then you're using a version of BOINC which is newer than the WCG preferred level. That is still way back at 6.10.58.

An alternative might be to use the RSS feature of "My News". That works great for me, but I use Mozilla Thunderbird as both an e-mail client and a feed reader already, so that's no big deal for me.

However, I believe that WCG techs should provide either a more timely e-mail, or notify people via the forum, at least until such time as WCG nominates a later BOINC level as sufficiently "hardened" for everyone to use. It would be very wrong to assume that all volunteers could use RSS feeds.

BobCat13

Thankyou for pointing that out smile

I had every box ticked under Email and MyNews but nothing under In-App Notifications - possibly because I thought In-App related to mobile phones etc which I don't use.

knreed published data back in May 2013 suggesting around 46% of users were using 6.10.58 or earlier so Apis Tintinnambulator makes a valid point.

Kevin - any chance of an update on that data?

Re: System Maintenance Sunday, 9 March

My BOINCTasks is set to pull notices/updates every 30 minutes, but the "edit" of the March 5 notice did not arrive:
System Maintenance: Sunday March 9th from 2:00 UTC - 8:00 UTC

5 Mar 2014

World Community Grid will be performing standard maintenance on our website Sunday, 9 March from 2:00 UTC - 8:00 UTC. During this time the website and forums will not be available.

Additionally, volunteers will not be able to attach new devices to World Community Grid. However, existing devices connected to World Community Grid will be able to report completed results and fetch new work without interruption.

[Edit] This maintenance was completed at 7:15 UTC. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected situation, we did have to stop the grid system for about 90 minutes during the change. We apologize for the inconvenience.
BTW, saw RSS icons in blue and in orange in places. Any significance? RSS used to be my "in browser" alerting system also set on News recently. This edit neither kicked an advise.

8.89% 16.29% 7.0
23.89% 32.49% 7.2
2.66% 0.58% 7.3

Complete Breakdown:

percent_devices percent_compute_power BOINC_version
--------------- --------------------- -------------
0.01% 0.00% 5.4
0.00% 0.00% 5.5
0.18% 0.14% 5.8

I believe that my earlier report was based on devices contributing to CEP2 specifically. This is total across our grid.
