Hoe veelbelovend zijn deze nieuwe behandelingen?

Bij sommige immunotherapieën blijkt 42 procent van de kankerpatiënten klinisch te genezen. We hebben hoge verwachtingen, hoewel het effect nog niet is bewezen. De veiligheid staat al wel vast.'

Mag u deze behandelingen zomaar aanbieden?
'Gebruik uit mededogen is volgens de wet toegestaan. Daarvoor moeten we wel bij de Inspectie voor de Gezondheidszorg toestemming vragen. Tot nu toe krijgen we die toestemming altijd. Normaal duurt het 5 à 6 jaar voor nieuwe medicijnen worden geregistreerd. Voor kankerpatiënten is die tijd er niet. De snelheid van de toestemming verschilt per land. Het opstarten duurt altijd het langst, in Frankrijk is dat doorgaans een kwestie van 6 weken, in Nederland duurt het iets langer.'

Kun je medicatie via uw website bestellen?
'Nee, een patiënt moet altijd overleggen met zijn oncoloog. De arts moet iemands kansen inschatten.'

Vergoedt de zorgverzekeraar deze behandelingen?
'Dat hangt af van de zorgverzekeraar. Via samenwerking proberen we de medicatie tegen zo'n laag mogelijke prijs te leveren.'

Volgen er nog meer experimentele behandelingen?
'We knokken hard bij medicijnontwikkelaars en biotech-bedrijven. We hopen dit jaar te komen tot 10 of 15 nieuwe behandelingen. We zijn er ook voor mensen met MS en ALS, neurologische aandoeningen zoals Alzheimer en Parkinson en voor zeldzame ziekten.'
