I see a lot of this stuff is complete, such as cancer, drug ones, malaria but I don't personally see a huge effect it's actually having. Basically, what has world community grid done that's helpful or had an effect?

What is done here is basic research, thee kind of stuff which takes years to bear fruit, if ever. If you are looking for the miracle cure in six months, this will not happen from here, just as you will not see a skyscraper if they are currently building the basement. What is being learned here is the foundation to better understand disease mechanisms from the ground up. This kind of knowledge helps to provide the basis for finding treatments (drugs, radiation, diet, activity etc.) which target various aspects of the disease process. The more knowledge which is found, understood and integrated at this level, the better we are able to know in which direction to go to get effective treatments.

In the letter of Dr Carbone it is stated that all cells of the same person have the same DNA. This is in sharp contrast to the article written in the November 1, 2013 issue of Science: Mosaic Copy Number Variation in Human Neurons. McConnell MJ et al Science 2013;342:632-7

In the letter of Dr Carbone it is stated that all cells of the same person have the same DNA. That is incorrect as stated here - from the NIH. Thatâs a surprise! The human body has trillions of cells and, with a few exceptions like cells that produce antibodies, scientists have believed that essentially all cells from an individual contain identical sets of DNA. But recent studies [2] [3] suggest that somatic changes in the DNAâthose changes not inherited from the parentsâmight arise in cells naturally and could, under the right circumstances, trigger disease. Now, researchers using MIDAS can search for even more subtle differences between the genomes of two cells from the same tissue or organ of an individual. These differences could provide insights into the evolution of neurodegenerative diseases, and also of cancersâwhich are known for being a genetically heterogeneous collection of cells. ![]() ![]() |
