If it's a laptop, yes, it could be more sensitive to heat since it's running at 100%.
----------------------------------------The space inside is restricted and airflow could be a problem. Four common solutions are (1) Elevate the computer so the vents can draw in air. (2) Open drawers so air can get in/out. (3) Get a cooling pad designed to go with it. (4) WCG does have a "throttling" feature to reduce the percentage used by the program. It should ease the heat problem. The Community read-only FAQ has some info about that. THROTTLE FEATURE Desktops should not have a problem unless the ambient temperatore of your room is over 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

install a monitor to see what is happening. The agent on WCG actually exercises PCs quite a lot, so it actually shows you problems that you may not have been aware of.
There is a complete list of tools here I hope this helps. I use speedfan because I like the technical info provided. However everest is as good and slightly more user friendly. |

Is Hyperthreading Technology thrashing with something else on the system? Another user had a problem with a word processing sound application that was competing with a grid program.
----------------------------------------If any other heavy use program is on the system, you might try it without hyperthreading. If not, and the system is crunching and nothing else it probably wouldn't make any difference. The disadvantage of hyperthreading is that there is only ONE floating point unit, and HT switches back and forth between the grid and another program. Not optimal. After that, it might be time to investigate that throttling and give less percentage to the grid. That would cut down on the fan speed. My wife's AMD64 3400+ fan speed goes up somewhat at 100%, but it's not drastic.

The 'Useful Utilities' thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 lists at least 2 utilities useful for checking out overheating:
1) Motherboard Monitor: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ Monitors CPU temperature. If the manufacturer does not supply a temperature monitoring program for your board, then see if this program works with your computer. If the temperature is too high, then read http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683 5) Throttle Watch: http://www.panopsys.com/Downloads.html This can monitor some boards and tell you if onboard temperature control is throttling back on speed, which can otherwise lead to puzzling system performance drops. Consider upgrading fans or heatsink or checking for dust buildup and fan failure if it does show that your system is throttling back. Added: This link has already changed once. If it does not work, use Google to find a download site. |

Hey georgert - have you managed to come to terms with the excess fan noise?
Are you monitoring the temps? Are they within working limits? |

This is weird , in the case of my computer the WCG keeps the processor at 100% all the time but it does not exceed the temperature of playing a game , let's say Doom3 .
My PC is a Barton 2500 running as 3200+ ( 2.2Ghz ) ; 512Mb ram ; normal case , cheap CPU cooler ( this is why it stays about at 55*C ) . |

That's expected as it's all just computation. Games, especially 3D intensive games, push the CPU to 100% as well as exercise the graphics chip, thus games may actually push the temp of your computer even higher than WCG.
