It looks like dogs cansense magnetic north. That's not too unusual in the animal kingdom but the biological basis for it I think is still subject to debate.

This may explain why many dogs do that odd little turning routine just before they drop the bomb. They're "scanning" for magnetic North?

Amundsen never mentioned that problem with his dogs when he was at the South Pole....but who knows. ;)
