Running laptop with the screen powered down.

Hello all,

If I have a laptop running WCG 24/7 would powering down my laptop screen reduce the laptops energy intake vs just dimming is to the lowest level, but still keeping my screen on?

Also does turning your screen off and then to turn it on later damage the lcd screen and reduce its life span?

I know that this is not really a BOINC support question but could not find a more form thread to put this under.

Thanks

Re: Running laptop with the screen powered down.

It would be a minor power savings to turn it off. I doubt it lowers the life span having it turn off. It would probably extend the life of the back light.

Re: Running laptop with the screen powered down.

when using a portable device (like a laptop) always make sure that the airflow is NOT impeded in any way... don't set the laptop down on a couch or cushion AND if you can put a laptop cooling fan under it... I wouldn't worry about using a little bit extra energy -what I would worry about is burning out the CPU

Re: Running laptop with the screen powered down.

I think it would only be a problem if it was turning on/off several times a minute. Just a guess though, but probably still not very likely. I have only heard of screens breaking from physical damage (being dropped, falling off roofs of cars etc).

To add to what kffitzgerald said, laptops tend to block up with dust, really the only way to fix it is to disassemble the laptop and remove the fan to clean (app. once a year). However, you can't easily disassemble many laptops now. Another option is to used compressed air but this doesn't seem to work as well as disassembly.

Re: Running laptop with the screen powered down.

The ideal would be to turn the screen off and on only a few times a day. I doubt that doing this one or two times more a day than you already are would make any noticeable difference,
