I finally lost power today - for about 3-4 hours. Most of what was on the roads is gone now. The one casualty is my quad. After the power came back on, it won't power up. It tries to though. The fan starts to spin and the green power light flashes once with the noise of it trying to power up and the nothing. It will keep doing that about every three seconds if you leave it pluged in. It was fine up until the power went off today. I had checked on it this morning before that. I'm presuming it's the power supply. I'll be down to just two cores for a bit. The power supply is possibly the problem; it could be other things as well. I would give it a .6 probability of being a power supply but... If you have an old power supply around, I would try it first. I know I have the luxury of having spare parts around to help isolate a problem but if you have an old computer, sitting around, you might be able to "borrow" it for a bit to test. They are simple to hook up. Good Luck No spare parts sitting around here ![]() |

Google the exact brand and model of power supply and "blink code" or "error code" and see what you get. You would THINK that the manufacturer would have been nice enough to affix a sticker with this information, but alas.... As always, I'd recommend vacuuming & blowing out the dust. Check that all the connections are good. Look for obvious signs of problems - burns, bulging capacitors, etc. Verify that nothing on the mother board looks "unusual". If you have add-in cards, remove them and try to power on. Make sure that the fan turns freely - use a toothpick or similar. Be careful!! - D |

I assumed that Keith looked for the blink code; perhaps I assumed too much. I had a Dell XPS in here last week with 6 blinks. Looked that up and it was the video card. Replaced video card and back in business. |

Replaced video card and back in business. Thanks for all the info guys! Actually, I had never heard of blink codes before but I'mnot surprised they exist. The power on LED only "blinked" once until it tried again three seconds later. It's this retrying that has me doubting that it's the power supply even though that seems the obvious first choice. Power supplies don't always die completely. They may have enough left to power on but not enough juice to get the cpu started. It could well be that something is failing the POST which could explain the retrying. I took the system unit to the local Best Buy here to let them sort things out for me. It will be cheaper and faster for me that way when you include the value of all the time I would have taken to deal with it. I know enough about hardware to be dangerous but not enough to be competent. I want the machine back up crunching asap. BTW, I grabbed a 3TB external drive while I was there. 1TB would have been plenty but they didn't have any and it was only ten bucks more than the 2TB. I can use that to move my daughter's iTunes library off the hard drive of my machines and have plenty of room for full and incremental backups of both machines. Also, I was told MS has extended support for XP for another year. Since MS does OS's like Star Trek movies, my thought is to upgrade the quad from Vista to Win7. The laptop that's still XP would have to be a new install. At least then I could rest comfortably until it's time to upgrade both to Win9. |

The following is a note that I sent to my customers. I include it as a comment about Keith's Windows 9 Comment.
----------------------------------------A couple of months back, I sent out a note about Microsoft dropping support for Windows XP in April of this year implying, if not outright saying, that you should consider upgrading any XP operating systems computers. Microsoft has surprised us all by extending the anti-malware (only) support for XP for another year. Microsoft has announced plans to continue to support Windows XP anti-malware efforts through mid-April 2015. The company is still moving forward with plans to discontinue general support for the aging operating system this April, however. Specifically, the extended support is limited to anti-malware signatures in Security Essentials. It’s also worth pointing out that after this April, XP users will no longer be able to download and install the program. As such, it’d be a good idea to go ahead and pick up Security Essentials (it’s free) if you have an XP machine and haven’t already done so. Microsoft is pitching the extension as a move designed to help organizations complete migrations from XP to a newer operating system. True enough, it’s advisable to upgrade to a newer OS sooner rather than later as they will have security updates on a regular basis for some time to come. Full support for XP ends on April 8, 2014 at which point using up-to-date anti-virus alone might not be enough protection. To put it all into perspective, Microsoft Trustworthy Computing general manager Mike Reavey said late last year that Windows XP is six times more likely to be infected than Windows 8 despite the fact it has the same malware encounter rate. Windows 8 Discussion: Most people do not like Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 is only a marginal improvement. The reason is that Windows 8 broke with the traditional Windows interface for a more smartphone type interface that has been pretty much rejected by the user community (even today more windows 7 licenses are being sold than windows 8 licenses), the windows phone is not doing well competing against the Iphones and Droids and the Windows 8 tablets are not selling well. Microsoft was trying to have the same universal interface on all personal devices. In a perfect world, it would have made things much nicer for everyone; but put simply: the platforms and their general usage are just too different for that one interface to work as well as its competitors. Instead of Microsoft developing a universal interface, they have developed a universally unpopular user interface. A final note on Windows 8: A touch screen makes Windows 8 more productive. It will be interesting to see what Windows 9 looks like. If Microsoft continues with this notion of a universal interface for all personal devices or gives it up. From a corporate view, that has to be the 64 Billion dollar (or more) question. Everyone have a great day In deference to Gerald, you could just go with a Linux version ![]() |
