Technically I don't live alone. A friend of mine asked me to look after her cat 'temporarily' but that was a few years ago. What she didn't explain is that after a certain amount of time, I became the cat's property. Think of it as the feline version of the law of adverse possession only for people rather than real property. And as per usual, ignorance of the law is no defense so now I'm basically a glorified chew toy. But I won't bore you with my problems.
----------------------------------------What I'm curious about is this. Whether you live on your now or have done so in the past, how do you feed yourself. I generally use a fork or spoon, but eating alone allows one a certain amount of latitude. Seriously though, I tend to eat a lot of frozen food. It's mostly healthy vegetarian stuff though. I do have the occasional snack but I always buy those small 100 calorie bags so I know exactly what I'm eating. Not that overeating is an issue thankfully. I'm on some psych meds that are pretty effect at suppressing my appetite, but one should never underestimate the siren's call of Cheetos or Doritos. I also like fruit juices and teas and seem to consume a ridiculous amount of black tea lately. But that's a bit off topic. So what are your favorite food prep techniques, cheats and short cuts. Even healthy frozen food gets old after a while. Cheers. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Here's a secret passed on to me by my daughter http://www.gressinghamduck.co.uk/recipes/gressingham-poussin.aspx
----------------------------------------45 mins in the oven alongside http://www.auntbessies.co.uk/products/vegetab...ey-glazed-roast-parsnips/ and http://www.auntbessies.co.uk/products/potatoes-1/homestyle-roast-potatoes/ added at the appropriate moment pan of frozen veg 10 mins before the end. While you are plating this up throw into the oven a few small Yorkshire Puds After 45 mins put any episode of The Big Bang Theory on the telly and enjoy. Being on your ownsome at a time like this ain't so bad Twilyth what is a knife for apart from buttering the toast and prising open tins of paint ? If you catch some gravy in a small yorkshire pud it folds up nicely when you pick it up I got caught out the other day, after so long on my tod. I was around at my Sister's for Tea and I couldn't help myself.... there's a small yorkshire pudding on my plate part filled with gravy..... Only when I had posted it in there did I realise what I'd done. LOL. Like you say there's a certain amount of latitude ![]() The other thing you can't do in public is talk to yourself ![]() Which is completely unreasonable don't you think? If you have the scratch, check in area for any food/cooking clubs. These are for people who like to cook a wide variety of things. Most of these people long for feedback on the items they cook. Once you get to know them arrange to have them cook something for you at a neutral location. You can even offer to pay for some of the ingredients. Once you you find someone who is a good cook to your liking, make them an offer to cook for you once in a while, your place, their place, neutral location, doesn't matter. Always offer to compensate the person for their expertise. This way you will get a wide variety of meals and the other person will get the benefit of having someone appreciate their skill. Win - win.

I spend a day a month cooking. Make large quantities of chilli, curry and bolognese. I then fill some handy 1 portion size containers & freeze it. When I come to use it, the time it takes to warm up in the microwave, is also time to cook rice/pasta etc.
----------------------------------------There's a very nice butchers shop 5 mins walk away. His meat & potato pies are to die for! I'm also 5 mins walk away form a supermarket, they sell hot, cooked chicken. Delicious! Treat myself to a take away twice a month, and eat out a couple of times. ![]() |

I too, am owned by a cat. I got it for my husband some years ago, and thought it was a good swap. Like David Autumns above I seem to live on Big Bang Theory and frozen veggie meals in the winter.
I do binge-cook and freeze the results, and my friends trade veggy meals with me. Protein is the big problem for non-meat eaters so beans and peas feature. Chilli and curries of course. I also have a bad Ocado habit (A UK food delivery company which alleviates the need to go shopping) My curse is a lack of fresh veg in the winter, in the summer the garden provides, but salad is not freezable, unless you make it into soup. So I do. I eat out a couple of times a week, and cultivate my lunch bunch of fellow non-carnivores. I cook, Italian/Medit. food mainly, and also have a Secret Veggy Gravy Recipe for those British Sunday Roasts which used to use the fat from the beef roast to make the gravy. No beef = no gravy. The secret is to start with a roux and .......... The only cadaver-based food I miss is smoked bacon and real hot-dogs. The veggy substitutes taste like boiled pencil erasers. |

My curse is a lack of fresh veg in the winter, in the summer the garden provides, but salad is not freezable, unless you make it into soup. So I do. I grow all sorts of goodies in the summer. I still have some potatoes etc left. If stored in the dark they keep well. There are some varieties of leek that grow all through the winter, come snow, ice and anything that the winter can throw at them. I have a wee soup department in my garden with several hundred good sized leeks and parsley etc alongside which grows through the winter too. I plant leek seed early in the year in deepish trays. 69 pence a packet gets hundreds of leeks. I just leave them in the trays and transplant them in place as I harvest potatoes and other stuff etc. By November through to end of march they are an edible size. Have them all lifted by the end of march to plant summer stuff and freeze any extra. Do remember to plant more than you need for yourself, as all of your neighbours will want them. These dates etc are for the UK BTW. Give or take 2 weeks. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 11, 2013 7:48:26 PM] |

The veggy substitutes taste like boiled pencil erasers. Can't say I have ever had any of these. Perhaps the flavor would be improved if they weren't boiled, but fried and seasoned properly. Or perhaps the erasers were not yet ripe. Cheers
