I am a newbie who discovered WCG for the first time after visiting the Ripple site.
After spending 6 hours on WCG project, I found that my stats remained at zero, with no network activity from BOINC Manager showing on my Little Snitch Network Monitor. After searching I found that the Ripple site had led me to an older 6.x version of BOINC Manager! I then installed 7.2.33 and rebooted. But when I launched it, I got the Administrator error. After searching, I found that I need to first do an UNINSTALL and then REINSTALL 7.2.33 and REBOOT to fix this problem. I did so and the problem vanished. The problem now is that I am not seeing anything different in 7.2.33 than I was with the old 6.x version. (I am running OSX 10.9 Mavericks on my late 2009 i7 QuadCore iMac.) More specifically... Tasks = Mapping Cancer Markers Elapsed time is ticking. Remaining (estimated) time is ticking. Status = Running Connected to localhost (7.2.33) TASKS shows several lines of WCG in Progress (Running) But... TRANSFERS is totally blank STATISTICS shows: Project: WGC Account: JDW1 (me) Team: Ripple Labs ** But there are no statistics there! PROJECTS shows: Project: WCG Account: JDW1 Team: Ripple Labs Work Done: 0.00 Avg. work done: 0.00 Resource share: 100 (100.00%) Status: <blank> Why are my stats zero? Why is there no network activity to my computer? (i.e., why is my computer not uploading anything?) When I try to add a project it says that I already added the WCG project, so it's not a matter of me not having setup a project. Please advise. Thank you! |

Tasks = Mapping Cancer Markers Elapsed time is ticking. Remaining (estimated) time is ticking. Status = Running Connected to localhost (7.2.33) TASKS shows several lines of WCG in Progress (Running) All that is as it should be. Tranfers only come into play when a Work Unit is completed i.e. Remaining (estimated) time reaches zero. Then the completed WU is Uploaded/Transferred in a matter of seconds and BOINC moves onto the next available WSU. MCM WUs take ~4hrs generally but have been known to vary between 1 - 24 hs or longer. WCG Stats will remain at zero until your uploaded WU(s) are validated by a wingman. Select My Contribution >> Result Status on the ribbon towards the top of this page to see details of all WUs In Progress, Pending Validation, Valid etc Once one or more WUs show Valid WCG Stats will show the values at th next update either 00:05 or 12:00 UTC daily. When I downloaded version 6.x last night, I started it going, and it said it would complete in 4.5 hours. This morning I awoke to find it starting on a new 4.5-hour block. But the first 4.5 block of work had not been uploaded (i.e., I had not been credited). I then searched and found that such may occur if I am not running the latest 7.x version, since I am on OS 10.9 Mavericks. So I then Uninstalled, Installed and rebooted this morning with version 7.2.33. It has been running for about an hour, but I am still not seeing any comforting signs. When I click My Contribution here in the forum and then click on Result Status, I see a long list of Result Names, each with an "iMac" in the Device Name, all showing a Status of "In Progress." But the CPU time is showing 0.00 / 0.00 (and of course so is the rightmost column, "Claimed / Granted BOINC Credit." I don't understand why "CPU Time" would still be zero seeing that the BOINC Manager app on my iMac clearly shows CPU time. The only reason I am concerned and the reason I have even posted here is because even after my first 4.5 hour attempt, I was not credited at all. Perhaps that was due to my having used an older 6.x version, but I am not sure, and again that is why I am writing this post here. Thank you for your time. |

... Result Status, I see a long list of Result Names, .... all showing a Status of "In Progress." Are you sure they all show "In Progress"? If you have successfully completed and uploaded 1 WU then 1 entry will show something other than "In Progress" - most likely "Pending Validation". But the first 4.5 block of work had not been uploaded If you Uninstalled, Installed and rebooted before the WU uploaded then it has probably been lost.  Check again once another WU has been completed and uploaded and you should be able to see it in Result Status showing "Pending Validation" or possibly "Valid" Only then will BOINC Credit show a value. |

I see you have started returning results
---------------------------------------- see here ....and also be aware that if you switch off you will re-start from the last checkpoint, a lot of us here run 24/7 to avoid problems like that, although there are other ways such as hibernating with applications left in memory, before shutting down. Yes, I just checked and I see it's working now. So clearly my earlier problem was that I was using version 6.x on OSX Mavericks rather than version 7.x.
Thank you for the tips. One last question though. I'm on a Mac, so I don't hibernate. :-) But by "switch off" you mean "Sleep" too, right? (My wife has the habit of Sleeping this Mac after using it, so I'll have to train her not to do that.) |

Yes sleep will also suspend the task and if you do not have Leave Application in Memory (when suspended) then you will lose all the work since the last checkpoint.....if there is no problem leaving it on 24/7 then do so

Don't think it was mentioned, but the My Contributions page only updates every 12 hours. This means that if you see on My Contributions > Result Status page work that has turned Valid, it won't be added until the statistics are refreshed at 12:06 UTC [with an hour delay] and 00:06 UTC [when access is actually locked out, with about half an hour delay, out until stats are complete].
OS-X Maverick needs a certain 7.2.xx version as minimum to install and operate properly. The same applied to Lion, which has a sticky FAQ on the forums [which the admin may want to update for this Maverick caveat] |
