Inside the Preferences, I've come across terms such as "Additional work buffer" and "Skip image file verification"
I probably don't need to do anything with these settings, but how can I find what they might do? (if I did fiddle with them) The work buffer is set at 0.30 days... what happens after that? I could skip the image file verification, if I knew what an Image File is, and what might happen if it weren't verified... If I ever find out the answer to questions like this, is there a Wiki where I could share my new found knowledge? I'm one of the "Baby Boomers" from the 1950's and we're one of the largest segments of the population, if not the largest. We're reaching the age where one of our most frequently used phrases is "screw this, I can't be bothered" (if only inside our heads). Somewhere where we could find answers to "stuff" that is threatening to confuse us would be handy, and keep us committed. |

Those baby boomers often have to discover tools like Google ;O), but here's a wiki: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Local_preferences
----------------------------------------The initial preferences are 'best', where WCG has defined 5 pre-sets with names as Maximum Output, Power Saving, Minimum Impact, Standard Settings [default]. If you mess with local preferences, you're overriding the web-settings permanently, until you hit the clear button. "Skip image file verification": Hands off as it says: "Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC." edit: And wow, after all this time, welcome to the forums.:D [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 5, 2013 8:46:32 AM] |

Inside the Preferences, I've come across terms such as "Additional work buffer" and "Skip image file verification" I probably don't need to do anything with these settings, but how can I find what they might do? (if I did fiddle with them) The work buffer is set at 0.30 days... what happens after that? Let's say you keep your 0.30 days work-buffer, and specifies 1 day as "additonal". If you're running a v7-BOINC-client, this happens: 1: If work on computer drops below 0.30 days, you'll ask for (1.30 - work_on_computer) days, meaning somewhere between 1 days and 1.30 days. 2: If work on computer is above 0.30 days, you'll not ask for work. If you're running a v6-BOINC-client (example WCG's customized client), this happens: 1: If work on computer drops below 1.30 days, you'll ask for (1.30 - work_on_computer) days, meaning somewhere between 1 second and 1.30 days. 2: If work on computer is above 1.30 days, you'll not ask for work. The change in v7 is to cut-down on how often you'll ask for work. Note, regardless of client-version, it's per cpu-core. I could skip the image file verification, if I knew what an Image File is, and what might happen if it weren't verified... If you've ever used the BOINC Managers simple view, you'll see each sub-project has one or more icons. Each icon is downloaded to the client as an image-file. Since some internet-providers has found-out it's a "good idea" to re-compress image-files, the image you're downloading can be different from the expected, and BOINC-client will complain about corrupted download. Since the download is corrupt, the BOINC-client will try to re-download the image again and again. For this reason, an option to accept corrupted image-files has been added, to stop the constant re-downloading of image-files being corrupted by your internet-provider. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." [Edit 1 times, last edit by Ingleside at Dec 5, 2013 8:51:34 AM] |

Thanks for all the answers. Despite this, I've not found what I was looking for, and I suspect that I'm out of luck as things stand.
I was hoping for a way to set a default performance profile, and then specify different settings during the defined period. This way, I could use perhaps 50% of my CPU during the day, but be far more generous overnight, where the backup processes are all that is running, and they are I/O bound, and patient. Basically, I want it not to annoy me when I'm using the PC, and to have as much fun as it likes whilst I'm away, or asleep (perhaps nodded off at the keyboard). |

There's a separate thread on that just a few days ago http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,35927 . It requires a bit of DIY scheduling and scripting . (I reread your OP, but you don't mention it there as something you wanted).
For whatever reason, developers have turned this identical feature request down for years... or more factual they give it the silent treatment. Create a Trac-ticket over at Berkeley and who knows. |

Dear Luckless,
That would take a major change to BOINC. Good . . . oh, never mind. Lawrence |
