installation of WCG on ubuntu server

Hi all,

I'd like to install WCG also on our nagios machine, which is a headless ubuntu server 12.04.3 LTS.
Calling sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager wants to install 366 additional packages and I'm not sure, what gets installed there exactly!? I don't want to install a whole graphical user interface since it's just a server and I hesitate to install such a vast number of packages just to run boinc...?

Thanks and best regards,
cibomato

Well, as headless, dispense of the [not needed] boinc-manager gui part and see what happens [Just sudo apt-get install boinc-client]. Most all commands can be passed with the boinccmd tool or you could fetch BOINCTUI for terminal, a text only BM, for the easy way out.

Even then it's 351 packages and e.g. X11-common....
I don't want to flood this machine with all that stuff...

Re: installation of WCG on ubuntu server

Try just sudo apt-get boinc . Maybe some other headless running Ubuntu server operator can chime in.

edit: Of course you could also just fetch the Berkeley .sh kit... less convenient.

Re: installation of WCG on ubuntu server

jochrupp,

If you are running a 64-bit O/S on the server, then the majority of the packages are probably the 32-bit compatibility library (ia32-libs). IIRC, that library includes dozens of packages. You could issue a "sudo apt-get install ia32-libs" and see how many packages that includes.

Hope that helps.

Re: installation of WCG on ubuntu server

I have 2 Ubuntu servers running headless. Used
sudo apt-get install boinc-client
and X was NOT installed. Also do not remember much else being installed. boinc-manager does require X and a desktop GUI.

Re: installation of WCG on ubuntu server

Post-installation, how do you configure a headless client to work with your WCG account? So far, the boinc and WCG help pages have not been much help in this regard.

Re: installation of WCG on ubuntu server

From your favorite browser, access the WCG homepage (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org)
Click on "Settings", then click on "My Profile"
Enter your member name and password and click "Enter"
Locate your Weak Account Key. The weak account key is about 38 alphanumeric characters with an underscore after the first 6 characters; substitute that in the command below where it says WeakAccountKey
On the server enter the following commands: Note, the first command should move you to the BOINC directory. Be sure that you are in the directory where you installed BOINC when you enter the command.
cd BOINC
./run_client
./boinccmd --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org WeakAccountKey

That should get you attached to WCG and start downloading some work.

Here is a link to some other useful commands for boinccmd http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=503

Hope that helps, let us know if you need more assistance.
