Help! Totally new to this. I have registered and downloaded BOINC Manager 6.10.58 but it never connects. It says 'connecting to localhost' at the bottom but it never connects and eventually comes back with a message about not being able to connect to a client.
I have signed up to various projects but no tasks ever kick off as it never connects. Any help much appreciated. Cheers..... |

How did you install, service or user? Check in Task Manager, all user processes if boinc.exe app or boinc service is running. If it is not, BOINC Manager front end cannot connect to the back end client.
Normally, if you run the initial install, you're supposed to get a screen that ask you to add projects to the client. Did you get that far? Of course, you can visit My Contributions > Result Status to see if tasks were assigned. If there were, it means BOINC is doing something [in the background]. |

Thanks Rob.
I installed as a user. I can see that boincmgr.exe is running via processes in task manager. On initial install I was not asked to add projects. I had signed up for projects when I register on WCG before the install. No tasks sowing in My Contributions > Result Status. M |

OK, so open File Explorer and navigate to C:\program files\BOINC, or if the OS is 64 bit (professional is I suspect] and the client is 32 bit C:\program files(x86)\BOINC, and right click on a program called boinc.exe. Select "Run as administrator". Carefully watch in Task Manager if boinc.exe persists or bombs. Security software could be blocking. Watch screen right bottom if anything pops up asking for an OK or look in your AV event log if anything got blocked/quarantined.
Normally with a user install, the BOINC Manager [boincmgr.exe] when launched starts the core client [boinc.exe], but apparently something got borged. Rerun the installer and choose Repair. Better yet, uninstall and install again and choose in the advanced window "Allow all users". The WCG start consists of 2 parts. 1) Create the WCG account on the website. You did that. 2) Run the WCG installer, which would automatically attach WCG to the client. If not, in BOINC Manager Tools there's an add project screen where you can pick WCG near the bottom of the list. Let us know your progress. |
