Hi, I've tried uninstalling and re-installing to connect.
----------------------------------------I have done the user account removal and registry entries removals, etc. whenever I open the Boinc client, it just keeps trying to connect to localhost and giving error messages to close after 3 tries or whatever. When I try to click on "Add Project" it just continues to do the same thing but it never gives me the choice for World Community Grid or any other project. Any ideas? ![]() |

What OS and BOINC version are you using ? Is your AV blocking it ? Is your firewall blocking it ?
----------------------------------------Cheers

I think i got this resolved some time back by selecting 'advanced' , then 'select computer' and entering 'localhost' as a computer name.
If you're on Linux, try stopping and restarting the client via console with these commands: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Stop_or_start_BOINC_daemon_after_boot |

Windows 8.1 64 bit. I'm trying to run the Boinc client that is suggest for Windows 8 from the Berkeley site.
----------------------------------------I had changed it to local host earlier, but now it just keeps prompting me to cancel or exit and the loop keeps on going for that. Sometimes it will give me the option to change settings, but not always. When I try to set it to localhost, it fills in a password........already. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. ![]() |

For me it works for
name: localhost and a blank password. I would first try the password already filled in. If still no good, look into your Boinc data directory for a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg and open it with an editor. The password in this file is usuallly only needed for remote access. |

I'm at a loss. I tried those two options also to no avail.
----------------------------------------I don't see Windows Firewall blacking it either. ![]() |

When you did the un-install did you also delete the BOINC program and data folders? If not, un-install, clean the reqistry of BOINC entries, delete the folders then re-install. If you still have a problem you can try something that has worked for me when this happens. (1) Open the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file. (2) (A) If there is an empty line at the end remove it (2) (B) If there is not an empty line at the end add one (2) (C) Delete everything in the file and save the empty file The reason for the different things to try is that I have had all of them work at different times under different versions of BOINC.

I believe that it might be a rights issue.

when you check your task manager under processes do you see a boinc.exe as well as boincmgr.exe ?
obviously you will see the boincmgr.exe because your using that, but if your not seeing boinc.exe running then there is nothing on your localhost to connect. If you are seeing it try killing it and launching boinc.exe manually (in program files(86)/boinc/boinc.exe unless installed in another location) and see what is said. I find it difficult to believe it be permissions if your manager loads at startup as its your manager that starts up the client at first boot using the boincmgr.exe -a command. Hopefully this information helps in your quest to fix it ![]() |

In the TM (Start by hitting and holding Ctrl+Sht+Esc in that order), one wont see boinc.exe or BOINC immediately when installed as a service/protected execution mode. Then you need to select in the TM Processes tab the button left bottom "View all user processes" (freely translated). After, switch to the Services tab. It must say BOINC....... running. If not, right click on BOINC and pick "Start Service". See if it stays in that state. If it's not, also for the user level install, something is blocking it, usually the security software. For that exceptions can be set for certain ports (80, 443, 31416 on localhost IP 127.0.0.1)
Now this is Win 8.x which is bad for BOINC. You have to install when logged in as a local user, -NOT- whilst in an MS Life account they so kindly offer to set you up with at installation. Each time you switch user or log out, boinc unloads in that situation, I've even had it loose all work each time. The password for localhost is self-completing, in fact if boinc.exe is running and boincmgr.exe is started, no security software blocking the connection of these 2, and you do "select computer" both fields can be left blank, simply and OK suffices. Recommended is to change the gui_rpc_auth.cfg password to something you can remember, but not blank. [Default it's a 32 character random hash number, which no one will remember]. Makes remote connection at a later stage much easier, from your Android smartphone for instance or the BOINCTasks utility by Fred Efmer :D |
