Re: Half a Century.................almost!

I know others are way ahead of me but I have had to do all of this without the assistance of 'works' machines! I retired in 2001 and have done this on a shoestring

Crunching on a shoestring can be quite productive if you have some spare time, patience, nerve, a brass neck, and an ebay account.

It's possible to pick up a secondhand server with a couple of fairly newish low power variant Intel Xeon hex core server chips and oodles of ram for very reasonable amounts of money. Providing that is that you hang around waiting for an auction that doesn't have many bidders to come to an end and stick in a cheekily low bid in the dying seconds. Sure you'll usually lose, but there's plenty fish in the sea and you only need to win once. wink

I saw one sell with two chips similar to these with 32GB of ram, albeit without a HDD or dvd drive, for £387. cool

At only 120 watts to power the chips, if running without a HDD from a live linux distro, the total power draw would be minimal also and you'd be getting 24 days credit per day out of it. (2 chips with 6 cores each, doubled again by hyperthreading)

Congrats Scribe! I will have to wait about a year to reach that milestone!
