Hello all,
----------------------------------------I am considering of getting a new laptop. My current laptop is ThinkPad T430 Processor: Intel-core i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz Ram: 8gigs OS: Windows 7-64bit Professional. Graphics: NVIDIA NVS 5400M. If I purchase the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p does anyone know how much of an improvement should I except to see, aka will this improve the number of workunits that I will be able to process for WCG and increase my contribution to it? Processor: 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB) Ram: 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB OS: Windows 8-64bit http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y510p/ This is a personal laptop that I am going to be using to donate to WCG, but also use for other things so if you know if I can get a better deal getting a different brand I would love to hear them. Thanks for your advice in advance. [Edit 1 times, last edit by vitali.dedkov at Oct 28, 2013 6:59:11 PM] |

The Lenovo has a quad core cpu vs. the dual core that you have now, so yes it would provide an increase of about 50% more CPU crunching capability.
----------------------------------------Your current computer has a faster cpu @ 2.9 so that one will complete each individual wu quicker, but the Ideapad could do 8 units at a time instead of 4. ![]() |

I have this exact laptop except with two GT750M GDDR5 2GB (SLI).
----------------------------------------It about the same as my desktop, but on the desktop I lose one thread to GPU WUs. |

Currently I have mine set at 100% and I make sure it has enough room to get the heat out but I am worried that if I buy a newer and more powerful laptop that it might have a chance to overheat more, since it is able to do more workunits and a more powerful Graphics card. Sorry I am a recent WCG cruncher and I hear some say that its fine to leave your computer at 100% as long as you make sure to put it in a cool area and some saying that it messed up their laptop. Just wanted to know your opinion on it. |

Most laptops are designed with a cooling solution to fit the needs of the processor i.e. it should handle the cpu at full load.
----------------------------------------Some tips for a better laptop crunching experience: Put the laptop on a laptop cooler that has active fans, or at least put it on something that will allow for unrestricted airflow to the bottom of the laptop, like a grating. Remove the battery while crunching for long periods. The longer the battery is subjected to heat, the shorter its lifespan will become. Clean out the cooling vents on the bottom/side of the laptop every few months for maximum airflow. Even better if you know how to disassemble the laptop to clean it from the inside out. ![]() |

Just wanted to know your opinion on it. I have found that the cooling of laptops are hit and miss. Some run at full load and stay cool enough to leave on your lap. Others, seem to get really hot to the touch just sitting idle. YMMV in regards to actual results. The above suggestions are all good. I would also recommend installing tthrottle to help monitor the heat and to slow the processor down in the event that it is getting too hot. On a side note, I would also connect the Lenovo laptop to QCN since they would be able to use the accelerometer in the hard drive. That app is non-CPU intensive and should run alongside WCG apps without any real loss. http://qcn.stanford.edu/sensor/![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Awesome guys, thanks for the suggestions. I found that my current laptop is pretty good with the heat and I keep it relatively on a flat surface. Actually going to have to clean up the fans as I have not done that in a while.
Appreciate all the tips! |
