Hey,
I am not a gamer, but I am avid WCG cruncher and I never got into the GPU crunching side of things. basically, I have been offered a brand new GTX 670 graphics card for $180 http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX670DCMOC2GD5/ It's a pretty good deal and I am thinking of snapping it up for future GPU projects. My question is... Is it worth buying it? Considering we have no GPU projects in beta, it is a while before I will be able to use it. Is it better to wait and buy one when GPU starts up? Will I get more bang for my buck at that point? |

IMO its not worth buying a GPU for a project that hasn't been announced.
----------------------------------------After a GPU project comes out, it will become apparent which GPU's are the most suitable for that project, and at that time one can make a better purchase decision. The finished HCC GPU project ran appreciably better on AMD Radeon HD cards for instance.  |

Unless you plan on using it at another project, I would avoid making unnecessary purchases. We don't know if WCG will ever get another GPU project. We can only hope. Until then, there is no way to justify the purchase.

If you wanted to get a taste of GPU crunching Collatz might be worth a look. solo_collatz runs using only 0.2 CPU and so doesn't detract from WCG crunching.

Doubtlessly any future GPGPU drive at WCG would be aiming for an OpenCL implementation [can hardly think of it being exclusively CUDA based]. We all know that [with emphasis] -past- NVidia cards/drivers as run while HCC-GPU was available, are not very good at OpenCL... AMD outrunning this brand, hands down. Run on a 'used' NVidia system screen/mouse retardedness is reported, my own experience [on W8 and Linux], constantly crashing/restarting display drivers. Strict "only compute while idle" forcing.
Whilst, my digest of what's said about the upcoming project [using a project owners home grown science engine], there has not been any GPGPU code development as yet on it, just an orientation to see if feasible [which in amongst dictates a certain volume of work to make it last 6+ months]. Of course, they could always delay the project until the GPGPU has been tested, but see that as a no-option. GPGPU only, as someone proposed... not an option either, but then my telepathic skills are not good at all to second-guess what's going on in the minds of WCG. |

If you are running a GPU, see option to show your tasks on the web pages. e.g. Einstin @ home and Seti Beta - when looking at completed tasks and then clicking on a WU - allows you to see performance on different CPU/GPU on the same WU. I know the original poster decided not to buy the GPU at this time, but I was curious about the GTX 670 and checked out it's specs. Turns out it is slightly better than the GTX 760 I will be buying soon. If you go to nvidia.com they have a lot of nice comparison charts of their graphics cards. The 670 has 1344 cuda cores while the 760 has 1152 cores.
Here is the one I'm going to buy, it's an EVGA and its cool that they started making them with bigger fans and an open design, instead of those closed cards with the little fan they usually make. http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-SuperClocked-Dual-...=8-1&keywords=gtx+760 I know that WCG has no graphics card enabled projects at this time, but I also do some 3d rendering and some programs are Nvidia only, also I know that GPUGRID.net (boinc project) is Nvidia only also and I might use it for there and let my CPU do WCG. Plus of course you can use a GPU for games, watching videos, etc. |

A good GPU is always handy in a PC if you can afford it - especially with the NVIDIA CUDA technology that makes everything zippier. Also helps out with any graphic intensive programs like video editors and 3D modelling, if that's your thing.
I'd recommend it if you are looking to upgrade your PC, although more RAM and an SSD will speed things up more :) |

Just buy it and put in the system...it will be OK to run it!
