Just to follow up on this discussion. We have captured the ideas listed here and will be discussing them internally in the context of some of the new work we are doing and see what we can do.

For a minute there I thought that the idiots who designed the Obamacare web site had gotten in here.
I don't have a problem with the changes. It just startled me. |

To address a couple of points. The forum software isn't really a big priority is it?? Yes it's basic, yes it's not mainstream, but it works and there have been no security breakdowns that I'm aware of. New whizz-bang all singing and dancing forum software won't vastly increase the numbers using it.
Why? Well simply because the vast majority of people don't care about the forums. My ISP puts a lot of effort into creating a community site with blogs, forums using up to date software, integrated logons, etc The forums are used by friendly helpful customers and staff, and despite all the effort only a fraction of a percent of customers post anything - ever. Many crunching on WCG have been signed up through more interested friends/family who have convinced them that it is a good and worthy thing to do. They have little or no real interest in WCG let alone the forums, it is just something that runs on their computer doing something for the good of humanity. They will never be active forum participants regardless of how good the software is. You can lead a horse to water and all that. Secondly some individuals may have concerns, for whatever their personal reasons, about their e-mail address being available to others. It is more respectful of their voluntary contributions to WCG to make e-mail communications opt-in rather than opt-out. i.e. the default is to protect their e-mail address unless they specifically agree to release it. I don't think that should be changed. A PM facility can be useful, and shouldn't be too onerous to police, so should be considered since it doesn't require disclosure of other participants e-mail addresses. |
