AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

Has anyone looked at the spec's for this 'new' CPU?

Looks impressive, but the 220w power consumption makes it a bit of a monster!

The 5Ghz turbo speed is brilliant but with the 220w power consumption, I'm a bit put off

Has anyone looked at it?

Re: AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

I'm running my 8150 at 4Ghz air cooled completely stable

but with a TDP of 125W

I'm not sure too many motherboards could supply the 9590 with 220W. Mine's an Asus's Sabertooth which supports up to 140W CPU's

(Although ASUS claims my Mobo would support one with just a BIOS change!!)

As modern CPU's go even the 8150 is a gas guzzler (but produces serious results) 31,500 points a day on it's tod. You would get near 50K with the 9590 at 5Ghz

The 9590 will probably clock even higher than it' max turbo frequency but at a price premium, shortened life of your overstressed mobo and 220W+ thinking

Certainly in the UK it would be a non-starter

Dave

Re: AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

To me the increased Ghz at the expense of 100+ more watts does not seem worth it. 220 watts is basically graphics card range. I don't think I would use a graphics card with it hehe. I would also be worried about it overheating.

On the other hand an AMD 8000 series cpu using 125 watts is not so bad considering the Intel 6 cores like 3930k and now 4930k use 130 watts.

I also noticed the 9590 costs 700 dollars/437 pounds, for that much money I would definitely rather have the Intel 4930k for $580/362 pounds.

On the other hand I'm getting over 100K ppd on a dual opteron 6176 machine using no more than 115w per cpu. Even just one of these Opterons probably does the same work as the 9590 while using half the power.

Re: AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

Thanks everyone, interesting comments. I was thinking on the same lines that the power useage made it a non starter for 24/7 crunching.

On the heat generation side, I run watercooled CPU so it should not be an issue, although the increased fan speeds may make things a little noisy!

On the MB - my ASUS Crosshair V/Fz web page states the same as yours, upgrade the bois and it works.

I would really like to get one of these working with my 2 HD7970 GPU's! how many PPD would they turn out between them?

However, I doubt it will happen, although Christmas is coming!

Re: AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

ryan222h agreed but it comes down to cost

My best performing and still my main PC is this one with the 1055T 95W edition running at 3Ghz a core (*6) stable

See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,29297
The 905E lives on in www.theglobalthermometer.com

A grand total of 60Ghz for a total TDP of 285W

(n.b. I know this isn't total consumption)

an average of 4.75W/Ghz

a 9590 at 5Ghz = 5.5W/Ghz

GPU's trounce these figures

Re: AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

So, temptation and intrigue got the better of me! I’ve ordered one x AMD FX 9590 4.7Ghz base/5Ghz Turbo!

Here’s the plan, await with baited breath for the new CPU, when it arrives, the proposed system will be as follows:

MB – ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z (ASUS web page states only BOIS upgrade required)
CPU – AMD FX 9590
Memory – 32Gb Corsair Vengeance (1866)
GPU’s 2 x HD7970
OS Drive – SSD/M4 - 128Gb
CPU Cooler – Corsair H100
Case – Corsair Vengeance C90

This system will require some serious power, I hear you say! Yep, that is a Corsair AX1200i connected to the Corsair Link Commander so I can see exactly how much power this monster uses flat out!

Watch this space...

Edit - Correct GPU number

Re: AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-9590

Likewise

baited breath awaiting - space watching

I want to know - the pwm on the ASUS must be better than spec'ed. I would inquire as to whether ASUS expect to support 100% load 100% of the time with a warranty .. with just a bios change.

It's when the tracks melt and fall off the board that you'll have to be careful biggrin

Not even the P4's could sink that many watts. And they were fan heaters.

We're right behind you, peering through the slits in our fingers hypnotized

We'll know when it's switched on as lights will dim across the nation.

I'll keep a check on here http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ wink
