Thread: Are people interested when you tell them about WCG? |

I was just wondering what happens when you tell people about the program, are they enthusiastic? Do they not seem to care?
I have tried to tell some people about WCG and other grid computing programs, and so far no one has been that interested it seems. Some people are worried about security concerns, which is laughable to me especially in light of the recent revealing of the NSA monitoring, but I digress. I have been trying to spread the word on facebook too, but no likes or comments. So I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience, or maybe you have had a more positive experience? |

What you are experiencing is what usually occurs with me, and I will never give up with my efforts. I sometimes will come across another cruncher who is directing their computers in another direction and we end up comparing our crunching experiences.
The biggest question I usually get is "How much is your electric bill?" |

I don't think most people care... which kinda baffles me. I'm just glad that a few million people DO care. I do get a lot of "yeah, that sounds awesome!" responses, but those who follow through and sign up are pretty rare.. at least in my experience. |

It baffles me too that more people don't care enough to participate. Basically everyone is liable to get cancer in their lifetimes, or knows someone who has it or died from it. I know that people here tend to be more tech savvy, but the average person is definitely tech savvy enough to participate. If you can download an app on a smartphone you have the necessary skills hehe. |

I think part of the problem is the way I tell people about it. Here is a list of things I said and what I probably should have said. "It uses your computer's idle time." - "You set it to use as much CPU idle time as you are comfortable with." "Scientists run calculations on your computer." - "You control what research projects you want to help and then receive work for them." "Millions of computers around the world work together to solve problems." - "Your computer only communicates with secure servers sponsored by IBM." |

Really cool, Fantastic, Great Idea are some of the responses I get. No idea if any one has joined WCG as a result. I'll keep trying.
