Brandon,
----------------------------------------If your not going to OC then I think the heat sink and fan in the box would work; although a little hot, saving you $30 ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by cowtipperbs at Sep 16, 2013 9:03:50 AM] |

cowtipperbs,
Thanks yeah that's a good point. I usually like to keep things as cool as possible, but a few extra degrees with the stock cooler shouldn't be that big of a deal. I switched out the 32gb SSD card for 250gb caviar blue HHD. For only $8 more I think it's better to have a proper size HD, 32gb is just a little too low I think. Also I found a review on the Asus mobo I originally chose that said he was experiencing about 1/3 lower benchmarks using Linux compared to other mobo he used. So I think I will go with an ASRock 880GM-LE FX. Would you recommend going with 8gb RAM instead of 4gb? I considered dropping it down to 4gb to save a few bucks, but I'm not really sure how WCG uses memory to complete tasks. It seems like not that much memory is used, but I don't know. |

Here's my revised list removing the cpu cooler, and changing the motherboard and hard drive.

Here were the two other MOBO I was looking at
----------------------------------------ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131872) and ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131874) On the ram side I like to go a little bigger most of time, also a little old school, I all ways install in pairs For example the requirement for FightAids@home needs 250 meg per process so if you were running 8 threads you would need 2 gig. On the other had if you were to run 8 threads on Clean Energy you would need 8.1 gig. So if you were just sticking with other projects and not clean energy you should be fine. It getting late, please add you input Mamajuamauk. ![]() |

THANKS Mamajuamauk, I was also looking at the Gigabyte so I put in an order for the AMD 8350 and the Gigabyte MOBO. I would look at the case - ensure it has good airflow, these CPU's run warm flat out. Also on the CPU cooler, I would go with a watercooler, we can get Corsair H100's over here for around £100 new so should be cheaper over there, 2nd hand even less! Also old school on memory so I think I going with the G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900). For cooling thinking about something with a push/pull setup, not sure what kind as of yet. I have a nice little 650 watt PSU wanting to come out and play, and I think it will play nicely with the above. Noticed your on the other side of pond, here are some cost to compare. CPU $180 MOBO $114 Mem $119 Thanks again... The PSU may not be enough if you are going to run anything above the HD77 series GPU, defo not if running 2x GPU's Memory ok but PC15000 is a bit quicker, 16Gb is good

I have just 1 x 128Gb SSD cards in the 3 big machines, works well keeps un-necessary power useage down. I have a 500Gb WD Green in my main PC as data drive

The Case, should have good airflow and plenty of space for extra fans. The PSU is unlikely to be enough for any real flatout crunching, especially if you're going add one or more GPU's now or later If you're only going to use this for crunching, then leave out the DVD/CD drive, spen the money on upgrading the PSU or CPU

However, there's also another point(s) to be raised, in that Linux GPU WU's in my machines on my cards averaged about 35-40% less time/were faster than on the Windows 7 machine. Similarly, certain projects, especially those that use VINA, run faster (30-40%)on Linux vs. Windows. I was aware that VINA CPU projects run faster on Linux, but have not heard so much about the GPU projects. Which one were you running? Was it HCC here on WCG, or perhaps something else? |

Thanks for the advice. I was just trying to keep costs down, but I think with some things its just not worth cutting them out. For example an aftermarket cooler (it will be continually running hot even if not overclocked) or DVD drive (would make installing drivers more of a chore). I will probably go with a nicer PSU too, more watts and at least 80 plus rated.
On my i7-3770 desktop I too just have a 128gb SSD (Crucial M4). I was planning to add a 500gb or 1TB spinning drive later on, but it's been almost a year now and I haven't needed it. The SSD is right around half way used. Unless someone needs to store tons of photos, videos, etc. there's really no need for a lot of storage. |

I noticed Linux had much better AMD OpenCL performance in Einstein@Home, POEM@Home, and MilkyWay@Home, so yes, Linux is the king of crunching.
