Hello All,
New guy here, I joined a few days ago but wish I had stumbled upon this program sooner, it's awesome and the causes are great! I just have a few computer questions I could not find answers to in the FAQs. My main computer is a desktop with an i7-3770 chip and 16gb ram. What would be a good GPU to get that doesn't cost too much, say under $200, or which are the best bang for the buck GPUs for these tasks? Also I was wondering how much difference RAM makes using BOINC? For example say I were to builld a new computer, would 8gb vs 16gb RAM make much difference in this application? Thanks, Brandon |

Currently no GPU projects at WCG.
currently CEP2 is the big RAM user project, recommend 1 GB per thread min. As to future projects, trends seems to be more is better but will not know until they get here. HTH |

When GPU returns here I would suggest the HD7770 as value for money and some projects here like RAM so 16 Gb is better

However, I also work on this idea - 'get the best the budget will allow', the list here , is a snapshot of what was the best performing GPU's at the time. That may not remain the same when/if any new projects come online.![]() See what fits in your budget... AMD GPU's seem to be most popular on WCG.

Thanks very much guys, that is helpful info! :-)
One last quick question, I have searched and could not find answers....How do AMD cpus compare to Intel cpus for these tasks? Do the Intel processors generally run faster than AMD? For example does anyone know how an AMD 8 core like a FX 8350 performs compared to an intel i7? Thanks again, Brandon |

When considering which GPU card you should check that it is not on the excluded list
----------------------------------------knreed also published a list comparing GPU performance data from a small sample taken whilst HCC GPU was running: Graphics Card Performance |

Thanks again, Brandon Generally, Intel CPU's are consume significantly less power than AMD, what is very important. Just look at TDP parameter. I like my Radeon 7870, which should be right around $200 at newegg. Runs cooler than my 7950, the system requirements aren't too demanding, and no "Boost":) |
