confused The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth

I just received this BOINC manager notice:

"The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth. Your computer has been measured at 13.90 KB/sec".

Is this some kind of joke or what? I have never had any issues at all with The Clean Energy Project Before and I have a 100/100 Mbit Internet connection. So what is all this about?

This is likely to be an issue with your download speed from the internet. It is made sunday evening after all!

Check you download/upload speeds at speedtest.net

Re: The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth

This is not necessarily measured because of WCG, but the slowest project your computer has communicated with. My laptop runs the 'small' SN2S exclusively [small files give high transmission overhead] and is measured by BOINC as having 20KB up and 208KB down, enough to receive the single CEP2, which has that default setting if only 1 task is allowed! Permit 2 or more in your device profile, Read The Friendly Manual, and the BW limit is ignored! Then for all WCG cares you can run a 2400bit modem, and wait a day or 2 to receive 1 new result task assignment. You can force a limit with the newer clients, above 7.0.4x, and some tag lines in the app_config.xml so only 1 CEP2 runs at the time, or however many you specify as allowed for buffering 1-16+no limit. Any more will not process until one of the specified number <max_concurrent> is finished... (problem has nothing to do with nothing to do with Sunday).

Specific topics in the CEP2 forum.

edit: bolded the important bit for those above and below this post.

Re: The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth

I've got the same problem with my computer. I get the error "The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth. Your computer has been measured at 13.90 KB/sec".

The internet speed is 60 MB/sec. The computer oposit me doesn't have this problems.

According to speedtest 63 Mb/sec http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2929527072

Re: The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth

Let's try again: It's completely irrelevant what you get with Speedtest... it's the average speed that BOINC measures between your place and the WCG Toronto hosting. Since the small files have relative large overhead before they start uploading/downloading [handshaking and all], and finish before the transmission can reach any 'sustained' speed, the 13Kb is not unheard of. This is why there is an specific CEP2 override [see my previous post].

Re: The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth

Fast and easy workaround:
It worked just fine for me.

1. Shut down BOINC
2. Open the client_state.xml
3. Increase the value of <bwdown> and <avg_down>

Re: The Clean Energy Project Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth

Right, but we do -Not- advise that since:

1) If you corrupt that file [if you even knew where to find it, often hidden, often in a user protected data area], you loose all work in progress or buffered. Restoring a backup is pointless [BOINC itself backs up the file every minute or so, sometimes more often] since one connect attempt to server after the corruption is enough to reset verification counters. If client is found out of sync with server, chances are all or part of work is ditched!
2) Should you have other tasks with long interval checkpoints, you will potentially loose substantial amount of progress, thus...

See my previous post, set the permitted CEP2 number to buffer in the device profile to 2 or higher and use for 7.0.40+ clients the app_config.xml file [see other posts on this topic] to control the number of concurrent CEP2, if you need to.
