Obsolete files in client directories

As part of the roll-out of the new client, is there going to be any effort to remove the old files from the ~/BOINC/data/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ directory. The are files going back to the Rice project and a lot of various Beta versions of files. I believe when a client attaches to the project all these older files are downloaded. Seems like a waste of disk space and bandwidth for files that won't get used... Just a thought

Re: Obsolete files in client directories

Hi Doneske,

Detaching / Re-attaching WCG project in BOINC Manager will do the job wink (of course, it will also delete all downloaded WCG tasks).

Cheers peace

Here's a spout 11 take: Detach leaves some files, you may want to delete manually, before re-adding WCG, but, and this is not anything specific to the WCG client that's coming round about next year, being sarky, when you do that and you attach again, you still get expired stuff, particularly for beta. Not so concerned about the little image files, but I keep getting these darn files back such as beta16.baygame.db 11MB CFSW test file back, projected ended some months ago. Meanwhile being told on each connect I need 167MB more space to participate in the 4.8 GB QMC model project. shock

As for the leftovers after a detach, there was recent discussion on the dev tube at Berkeley, so we may see something with 7.2 [it was sort of decided to give it a full blotting]. You could test 7.2.7 of which there is a WCG test build [been running this version since whenever available on W7-64 [though 32 bit], and on Linux in 64 bit, and yes, run your tasks empty or you'll loose work in progress. Let us know your findings, if you are adventurous.

Re: Obsolete files in client directories

My main concern is with a brand new install and then the first attach to the WCG project. It starts downloading all these files for Rice and older projects that aren't necessary. Takes a little while to download too. I didn't think they were part of the WCG client but part of the project on the servers. They download regardless of the client. Why detach and delete? They will come right back sooner or later. I just upgraded 10 systems to 7.2.5 last weekend. Think I'll let these simmer for awhile before upgrading again.

Re: Obsolete files in client directories

Justed tested, Remove project deleted the full WCG-sub-directory, so appart for the job_log-file AFAIK nothing of WCG is left. (didn't verify if scheduler-request/reply was deleted).

After Joining WCG again, got roughly 1.2 MB of pictures to be used by the BOINC simple view. Appart for the two active projects CEP2 and FAAH, this includes C4CW, HFCC, SN2S and DSFL and a couple default WCG-files. So appart for DSFL still showing-up even after they've finished, there's not really much downloaded if you've just joined WCG.
