confused Forum Navigation

Like many others at moment I have arrived here having got sick of server downtime at Grid.org. Could anyone answer a couple of questions for me?

1. In Grid.org forums it had a neat feature to allow you to 'list all posts since last visit'. Is there the same feature here and I've just not spotted it or do I have to use search?

2. What is the difference between 'Normal Mode' and 'Enhanced Mode'?

3. What is the 'Backup' feature used for in UDMonitor?

Thanks for your patience with Newbies.

We don't have this feature. Over on grid.org, when you sign in it tells you when you last visited. Another nice feature we don't have. I usually click on 'Recent Threads' and read down the list of threads posted to until I reach familiar territory (from memory).

I do not use UDMonitor, so someone else will have to answer your other questions.

If you sign in and use the recent threads, you can see that there are some envelopes with color. From what I know of, Bright Red is an unread thread that's hot, Blue is just a normal unread thread, Pink is a read thread that's hot, and Marronish (Dark Red) is just a normal read thread. I use that when I read. Useful on the Recent Threads page.

Re: Forum Navigation

This may not be a practical way of handling things on a larger scale, but for a small group of threads that you are really interested in, you can use the options:
    My Watch
    My Favorite Threads
    Find all my posts
in your forum profile *the place you set up your signature, no of posts displayed on a page, etc..)

Re: Forum Navigation

Thanks, jujaga.

How did I forget that? If you go to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/help you will see the index to all the documentation on how to use the mvnForum software. If you click on the FAQs at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/mvnplugin/mvnforum/docs/faq.html then you can scroll down to:
4.5 What do the icons to the left of each post in the recent thread and forum index pages indicate?
I am sure glad you asked; the icons come in 4 colors and mean this
• Blue - light - thread
• Blue - dark - thread with new posts added since your last login
• Red - light - a hot thread (has had many posts)
• Red - dark - a hot thread (has had many posts) with new posts since your last visit

The reason I forgot about this is that we are using 2 servers, although the mvnForum software is designed to run on only 1. This breaks some features. In particular, it breaks this feature. So I have trained my eyes to ignore it. I think that it has been almost half a year since I even thought about it.

Maybe this feature has been fixed since I started ignoring it, but I do not remember any announcement, so I think that this must be considered an unreliable feature.

But I feel really stupid not to have remembered it. smile

Hi Folks,
Thanks for prompt response, I'm actually finding 'Recent Threads' works better than Grid.org method because it refreshes after every reply I put in showing which ones I've checked out/responded to.

The Normal Mode/Enhanced Mode part of my query relates to the 'radio buttons' showing in top left under format when writing new post.

Hope you are all well and "A' the Best tae you and yours".

You are correct - this problem has not yet been resolved.

Re: Forum Navigation

Hello EvoDude,
2. What is the difference between 'Normal Mode' and 'Enhanced Mode'?

I have just been looking through the documentation at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/mvnplugin/mvnforum/docs/user.html and I think that I have found the answer.
Formatting Posts

By default, a new post will present the text the user typed into the body section as plain text without any formatting. The one exception to this is that carraige returns will be preserved and presented to readers as new lines. To edit the format of posts, use the basic formatting tools provided in the 'normal' mode or the enchanged mode which adds the ability to nest formatting tags.

No wonder I could not find Enhanced using Search. I think that enchanged in the documentation is a typo that should read Enhanced. If so, this explains why my early posts with slightly complicated formatting did not work. Apparently, you need to switch to Enhanced Mode to nest formatting tags. I have not experimented with this yet. I have just found it.

Any comments from smarter members that already know all about this feature? What works and what does not work?
