Perhaps someone can answer a question for me. For the Results Status page, I have noticed a device name of localhost, but I have never added such a device.
When I ping localhost, I get Pinging DKT0529E4878D [::1] with 32 bytes of data and the Reply from ::1: time<1ms The tasks being run on localhost are FAHV_ 91h-uc1_ f1038_ NNRTI_ NNRTInADJ_ 0082955_ 0249_ 9-- localhost In Progress and FAHV_ 91h-uc1_ f1038_ NNRTI_ NNRTInADJ_ 0094050_ 0150_ 2-- localhost In Progress I thought I might be able to display the work for local host if I could find out how to do that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. |

Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Dave, BOINC has always said "connecting to localhost" everytime I've started it up on every machine I've had. However, for that to show up as the actual device name, that means you have "localhost" in the "full computer name" field on the "Computer Name" tab of "system" entry in Control Panel on a machine somewhere. Could this be one of the laptop's your son is adding? |

It is not a real host name such as Gandalf (in my case) but rather a generic name for a task that hosts the various work units in the computer. I do not understand the comment about the "Results Status page". Is that on the website?? Signed Confused in Texas. |

I do not understand the comment about the "Results Status page". Is that on the website?? Signed Confused in Texas. I see that my question is resulting in just as much confusion as I have. By the way, localhost is showing up in the list of devices when and appears as a real device name. When Patrick added his computers to dkt, one of these is an i7 and it has 8 (eight) active tasks for BOINC. The other machines he added are duo's and they have two active tasks per device name. I do not know where localhost is coming from. edit: I just checked the work being done by localhost, and two tasks are marked valid and two are in progress. The two marked valid have CPU Time / Elapsed Time of over nine hours. Has anyone been able to use the BOINC manager to see what work is being done on localhost? I did go to the advanced view for BOINC manager and I am seeing a title of World Community Grid - BOINC manager - (localhost) but the work displayed is not the same work that I see when I go to Results Status and choose localhost as the device name to filter the work being done. I also checked all of the other device names added, and there is nothing that relates the device to the localhost device name in the Results Status information.
----------------------------------------I am thinking there might be additional processing being done by one of the computers which was added by Patrick, but there is nothing to associate the device with a particular computer. I am still scratching my head. edit: One thing that did occur to me is Patrick did get a new cell phone, and he was showing me how he could access WCG and BOINC manager using the cell. Could it be this is what is being associated with localhost? If so, the question becomes what does he need to do to assign a specific device name to the cell? Could it be this is what is being associated with localhost? If so, the question becomes what does he need to do to assign a specific device name to the cell? Dave, consider trying this: On the WCG website, select Device Manager from your My Grid page. on the top of the Device Manager page, change Installed/Registered Device: to "anytime" and With Result(s) Returned: to "in the last 14 days". That should get you a list of the device names for all of your machines, Patrick's i7 and duos and this "localhost" machine. If this accounts for all of your and Patrick's computers plus localhost, it's probably the phone.I think you should be able to confirm that by going to Results Status, selecting localhost for device name and In Process for Result Status. You should be able to compare that with the list of wu's running and waiting to run on the phone. If they are the same, the phone is localhost. As for changing the device name, that would be something you'd do in the OS on the phone however that is done (if it can be). |
