Info re new project

knreed Oct 22, 2013 9:22:14 PM
We are in the final stages of the alpha testing. However, we have been here for a couple of weeks. What has blocking us for going into beta testing at this time is one technical issue that either crashes the application or causes it to generate inconsistent results. We are digging deep into this one but it is taking longer than expected. Once we clear this issue and have a clean alpha testing run, we should be clear to start a beta test. Sorry that we cannot provide a clearer answer at this time.

sounds like it'll be any day now.. =) hopefully they fix the technical issue and I can then start ranking up in Beta =D it sucks having only one medal haha also just hit 12 days for CEP2 =D not much longer to go now for my first medal there! =D

Re: In Other News

I'm just over 2 days from getting my first BETA badge - running a 2-day cache means I don't pick them up early/quickly, may have to look at dropping my work-cache down to almost zero once the beta starts.

Beta Testing : 54,370 : 105 : 0:011:20:27:01

What about if you set your project selection to exclude FAAH & CEP2 so effectively select only Intermittent Projects of which none are currently issuing work. Wouldn't that mean you got only BETA WUs in your cache? thinking You might have to adjust cache size if the BETA WUs have a very short deadline. It's also possible to abort unwanted FAAH & CEP2 WUs to clear the cache without affecting your device reputation.

The big question will be how large is the BETA test?

Re: In Other News

Not too fussed about aborting work, when the beta starts, will just do the beta-work-units when I get round to them - they tend to have a high priority, when you download them anyway, so it's not as if they'll wait too long if they have a shorter deadline!

In Other News

More info from knreed about the new project testing - but no date!
Our development/testing process, in short, consists of:

* Running the initial application unmodified
* Modify the app to add checkpointing, trimming unnecessary output, etc
* Run this modified version in standalone (i.e. not under the boinc client) and test that it reproduces results equivalent to the unmodified form
* Next is what we call alpha testing (but probably could also be called integration testing). This is where we put the research binary onto our test BOINC grid and run a set of workunits against it (workunits at this stage are built using our production processes). We have a 15 or so test virtual machines, some physical machines (like macs), plus all of our workstations from the team that are running the client and are connected to our test boinc grid. The virtual machines are built so that the client is killed and restarted every 3 hours to stress test checkpointing.
* Once we have stable results out of alpha and the results are verified as correct by the researchers, we are then able to go beta testing which is where we get your help to run across a much greater diversity of machine types and look to see what happens.
* Once that is stable we get to launch

Hope this helps everyone understand what we are doing.
