Full details of my planned workstations can be found at: http://ecomm.euro.dell.com/dellstore/basket.a...mp;s=bsd&itemtype=CFG Click on 'adjust system' for full system specs as they stand. Looks like Dell's site needs a login to see an active shopping-basket... However, given the money involved already, have you considered the E5-2695/2697, ie. the new 14-core CPUs? They run a little slower per core than the 2687, but more cores for more run-time! ![]() I don't need the per-core power for rendering/etc, so the E5-2683 (14-core 2.00GHz) is on my wishlist at the moment. ![]() |

. I am planning on purchasing some new workstation class hardware - a fixed workstation and a portable workstation for Autodesk (CAD) applications. Currently deciding which components to use, and how much to spend! Both will be high specification machines and will help heat the house! Hoping that between them they will double my current output and give the team a much needed boost! ![]() Cheer's crooks x99 is the way to go, the i7 5820K is worth a look at about £315. Nice little overclockers as well. ![]() Specification:- - ONLY Compatible with X99 motherboards & DDR4 memory! - 3.30GHz base frequency - 3.60GHz Turbo frequency - 6 Cores, 12 threads - Fully unlocked - 15MB Cache - Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 - Intel Hyper-Threading Technology - Supports LGA 2011-v3 socket Good morning team, Unfortunately the i7 5820k wont give me the performance I need for intensive 3D modelling and rendering operations. Currently looking at a Dell Precision T7910 workstation with dual Xeon E5-2687W V3 CPUs (total of 20 cores and 40 threads @ 3.1GHz) with a Quadro k5200 (8GB vRAM) graphics card and 32GB RAM. When its not rendering, it should be one hell of a crunching machine / heater (Each CPU has a 160 watt TDP)! ![]() For the portable workstation (laptop), I am looking at a Dell Precision M3800 with a i7 4712HQ 2.3GHz (3.3 GHz turbo) CPU, 16 GB RAM and Quadro k1100m (2GB vRAM) graphics card. Shouldn't be slow by any means! ![]() Going with 2 Philips BDM4065UC 40" 4k displays (http://hexus.net/tech/news/displays/77973-40-...-4k-monitor-launched-549/) and both will be running on solid state drives. Just trying to come to terms with the cost! ![]() Are you to busy to self build have you tried phoning or email over PC companies for a quote to see if its cheaper Dell charge the earth. But loving the spec. I have tried a few companies and there is very little difference in price. I have used Dell workstations for quite some time and find them to be excellent, plus they come with next day warranties, which I have found invaluable in the past as I cannot afford the down time / lost productivity should something go wrong. My IT department are currently trying to secure further discounts! ![]()

I have decided against these Thargor as most AutoDesk operations are single threaded (apart from rendering) so I will see the most benefit from the higher clock speed of the 10 core CPUs most of the time, although the extra run time on WCG would be nice!

# 627 Welcome to WCG and to the UK Team applai ![]() Curious ![]() He was here but now he's not! ![]() He joined the Team around 00:05 and was still here around 10:00 when I compiled the Morning Update but now he's not. Since he joined and lleft on the same day it's as though he never was and AllTime Members reverts tp 626. The annoying thing is that he returned a completed WU 12/01/15 11:04 Grrr! ![]() It maybe that applai has realised he made a mistake and reversed his retirement! ![]() My Team shows Current Members 534 and All-Time Members 627 which is an increase of +1. Status (Current/Retired) doesn't reflect this and still shows 636 but this maybe because of his previous "here one minute and gone the next" history. Member Name however shows his Status as joined 16/01/2015. So a tentative "Welcome back" ![]() |

Thanks for the heads up Thargor, I will check them out. How is the 'monster' coming along? They are reasonably priced for a similar specification at £8,119 vs Dells £8,461 with no discounts for the fixed workstation. But Dell offers a £2,369.08 discount on this and it looks like my IT department can get another £600 discount from Dell on the fixed workstation so Dell will be getting my money this time around.

Thanks for the heads up Thargor, I will check them out. How is the 'monster' coming along? Unfortunately still on-hold, at the moment, although the plans have changed slightly to using a pedestal-server and running it at home (which should make electricity costs even more interesting). Current plan involves one of these: http://www.rackservers.com/Configurator.aspx?S=2009 - 2 * E5-2683 V3 (14-core 2.00GHz) - 8 * 8GB DDR4-2133 (32GB per CPU) - 2 * 500GB WD VelociRaptor (RAID-1) - all other options as-is Then, if/when WCG add a GPU-supported project (or projects), I can look at adding some AMD R9-290X GPUs in (I think the supplied PSU might "just about" support them). But, until I get through a few more items on my to-do list, it's just a pipedream for now (and subject to change). ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Thargor at Jan 16, 2015 7:38:33 PM] |
