Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

Hi Genhos

I expect you've been gaining on me recently - I went away for a week and when I got back my computer wouldn't boot! Gave it to TBD to have a look and he concluded the graphics card was dead and causing the problem - the one I bought 12 months and 1 week ago and it's a week out of waranty !!

So I'm slumming it on the built-in Intel gfx for the moment, until I can source a new gfx card - and even then I'll be wary of running GPU tasks on it as that could have been the cause of its early demise!!

Those GPU tasks were giving me my decent scores, ~500 points for 20min work.

Now you stand a fighting chance against me!

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

Ah the good old "just out of warranty"! It does sound as though the gfx card has unfortunately been cooked if it's been running gpu units pretty much all day every day.
Trying to get a new one is a bit like trying to find rocking horse poop at the moment.

Don't think I'll catch you up though, you're 25million points ahead of me in the team rankings and at the current rate, Dave's site reckons that's over 3500 days for me to overtake shock

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

Hi guys, unfortunately I have bad news.

Northern Ireland Electric are upping the cost of electricity by 21%.
I can no longer justify running WCG like I do now.
On the 1st of December, the contribution from my threadripper will cease, leaving me with only a few computers crunching which belong to other people that allowed me to install WCG, and my phone.

Feeling a bit gutted but I have no other choice.

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

I can sympathise DMNI. I've always looked on it as a charitable donation, but with the increased cost of electricity it becomes harder to justify. Also, with climate change very much on the agenda, I'm not convinced that running a computer more than absolutely necessary is the responsible thing to do. Unless of course you have your own source of renewable energy (I don't). Having said that, I'm still running mine for short periods as a contribution to heating the room when I'm in it. Still, even small contributions help towards the overall research goals, and the badges do appear eventually.

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

I sympathise too. My latest bill is over £200 for the month, probably mainly freezers and irrigation pumps. The good news is that I am going SOLAR. I can get a 10 kW system installed here for around $8700 Later if I wish I can go completely off grid but because the local electricity company will give me credit for what excess I generate during the day I can effectively be off grid without having to buy and service batteries. The next step will be to put in SOLAR water heaters too and that will cut down on the immersion heater. I feel that I am really doing my bit for the environment. Wanna sell your threadripper DMNI?

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

I'm going to do some testing to see what I can do to get my power usage to a minimum, regardless though, no matter what I do, I'm unable to run WCG. Same on my wife's computer.
I don't have any plans to sell my threadripper, it is a fantastic system for doing video work and other tasks that can utilise multiprocessing. The motherboard is amazing.
So many configurations are possible, and more connectors for devices than I would ever need.
I can setup a number of system profiles, one for low power usage and one for max processing and can switch them with a single click of the mouse. A reboot may be required if the number of active CPU's is changed though.

Would you be interested in buying it Rob?

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

Thats it guys, All my units are done, threadripper is now idling and the fans have gone qiuiet. Too quiet, there is something about the hum of quality fans.
There is a handful of units on the wife's computer which will get done through the week.
Guess I have to turn the radiator on in the room now. (:

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

I'm still running mine when the room is cold, but only when I sitting in front of the computer. It keeps my feet warm smile. It adds about 110W to the consumption (for 24 threads). Interestingly, the overall package power consumption hits 142W at about 18 threads, so I guess everything slows down due to power limitations above that.

You have solar panels I believe, DMNI, so hopefully you can do a bit of free crunching when the sun's shining? I'm sure we've not seen the last of you!

Re: Stats Site Morning Updates

I'm not going anywhere, will just have to use as little electricity as possible, going to use my spare raspberry pi and an old phone or two. The wife would rather have the extra electricity generated by the solar panels go onto the grid as we get paid for it. Will have to convince her to let me use some of the spare, she does agree with doing WCG as long as it doesn't cost anything. Might be able to crunch during certain times on sunny days.
