Will there be an option to turn off GPU when system isn't idle?

I've noticed that GPU crunching with the BOINC 7 client tended to never give up any GPU if the system was in use, giving terrible system performance. CPU crunching gives up to system use, but I didn't notice the GPU doing the same. So I was thinking it may be wise to have an option to use CPU but not GPU while the computer is in use. Is this an option upcoming or already in BOINC 7?

There always has been since GPU processing started. wink In your device profile, just under where it states CPU use, there is GPU use -
Do work while computer is in use?
Do work on my graphics card while computer is in use?

Yes, but is it possible to stop the use of the GC when the computer is idle. Because for the moment, in all of case the GC is used when the computer is idle ... No ?

JillianC, You would need to install BOINC as a service or you would need to use a cc_config.xml to tell BOINC not to use your GPU.

If your GPU is the only one in your system, then use this flag. If you have more then one, change the 0 to whichever GPU ID it is. And this is assuming it is nVidia. You can do the same for Intel and AMD GPU's.

<cc_config>
<options>
<ignore_nvidia_dev>0</ignore_nvidia_dev>
</options>
</cc_config>

Edit: Make sure you put the .xml file in the Program Data\BOINC folder.

Re: Will there be an option to turn off GPU when system isn't idle?

Here's one by spout 11 (a poor translation from a foreign language), no client config fumbling required:
If my computer can process work on my graphics card, then please send me work to run on my graphics card for the projects that I have selected above.

This option is both on My Grid > My Projects and on the individual device profiles My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profiles.

Not ticking the box [default = not], would prevent any sending of GPGPU tasks by WCG [globally, or at device profile level]. At any rate, at that time, it does not matter how the client is locally configured. My hope is [don't expect it], that if the client should check in with WCG for GPU work, it's told to back off for a longer time [until one hits the Update button which resets most delay connect counters [except a few that are server enforced, no matter how often one hits that button.]

P.S. "Spout 11" means something like a firefighter who arrives [too] late, only sucking mud from the moat, or something to that effect
