My guess is that the meta package contains both the client and manager. (At least that was the way it was in Synaptic) I would install the meta package first then see if both the client and manager are there. If not then install the other two packages. Hope that helps. [Edit 1: Additional ideas:] I've never installed the .deb method, I usually use the .sh Berkeley installer so I don't know if this will be an issue for you or not. But after you get it installed, if you get any messages about missing dependencies or missing libraries, Install these 6 libraries: (sudo apt-get install library-name) libwxgtk2.8-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev libxss-dev ia32-libs libstdc++6 freeglut3 Hi Cap. I usually just use synaptic but since I've been have this problem with Boinc pinging my router all the time, I wanted to try another version. I already tried a clean install of Boinc 7.0.27 it's made no differance, so I went and got this version in deb file format at least they can be installed with synaptic. |

P.P.L.
----------------------------------------Moi, can't reason it does matter whatever BOINC version, as the RPC system in there has not changed since yonder days. Is your localhost connection specified as 127.0.0.1 [correct] or the assigned LAN IP, becaaauuse... then you get constant router pinging. But, as was mentioned, if you have something like BOINCTasks or BOINCTUI running, these constantly poll all the clients on the (W)LANned hosts. My LAN lights are dead, but the WLAN light is doing overtime [WIFI], all the time. It's in a cabinet, so I don't see it :D Test: Unload BOINC Manager [and any BOINCTasks or similar instances], but leave the daemon/service running, default setting on Linux. Then the BOINC Manager to core client RPC ends [think it's once per second] over any IP. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 21, 2013 7:58:42 AM] |

So now how do I fix this can I change it somewhere. No I don't have any of those programs at all, how did the address get changed I installed the same as before Ubuntu crashed. edit // I'd be most happy to not have to install boinc again,, I've now got 4 of the same rig on here as it is because we can't merge computers here. Thanks. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 21, 2013 8:24:59 AM] |

In the Advanced menu > Select Computer, simply type localhost , no password and OK, then see what happens. If no improvement do the Select computer again. Enter 127.0.0.1 as computer, no password and OK (The Gianfranco builds have no password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg... don't know if yours contain anything).
----------------------------------------Could be you specified it in the remote_hosts.cfg or hosts file. At any rate, my last entry in remote_hosts.cfg is... 127.0.0.1 localhost to make sure the client is not picking the WLAN DHCP pre-assigned LAN IP. edit: To get the 'mutual' and everyone who's reading understanding noses aligned: 'client' or 'core client' is the daemon/service base boinc process [on Windows boinc.exe]. The BOINC Manager is the GUI front end [on Windows boincmgr.exe], not required to run BOINC. Without thinking when you say 'client', it means BOINC was stopped completely ... then no wonder the blinking ends ;>) [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 21, 2013 8:38:49 AM] |

Your right I meant manager, always mix those.
---------------------------------------- Tried putting in localhost nothing happened, then tried 127.0.0.1 manager shut down / disappeared completely. I'm still running Boinc 7.0.27 form synaptic a.t.m. & I haven't used the remote_hosts.cfg so I'll see if I can find that file & change the i.p. if it's wrong. Hi.
----------------------------------------O.K. I'm back had to get some sleep. I tried looking at these 3 files like so. ( sudo gedit /etc/boinc-client/--file name-- ) hosts.cfg remote_hosts.cfg ( Was the only one that had anything in it ( an example only. ) gui_rpc_auth.cfg Other files were empty & I didn't add anything to them.....Am I looking in the wrong place. Any other ideas. Thanks. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 21, 2013 9:49:34 PM] |

This is interesting,
Your startup messages show that gui_rpc is authorized Thu 20 Jun 2013 07:17:43 EST | | Config: GUI RPC allowed from: But there is nothing in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file? You might try looking at the cc_config.xml file in the BOINC data directory and see what it has for gui_rpc configuration. From the cc_config configuration page <allow_remote_gui_rpc>0|1</allow_remote_gui_rpc> If it is in there and set to 1 you might try changing to 0 and see what happens. Not something I use so I am guessing, but it is worth a look. Hope that helps. |

Hi Captain.
----------------------------------------I've never used it either I think it's there always, because it's showing up on my other rig running 6.10.58 ver & I didn't enable it there either. @ SekeRob. I've looked at all the files on both my rigs & they look the same b.t.w. I couldn't find any host or hosts file on either rig are they suppose to be there.edit/ O.K. I found the hosts file, it's a system file that's why I didn't see it to start with comparing my 2 rigs they look the same apart from having different host names. I can't find any reference to any i.p. address in any of those other files anywhere. I've tried googling this problem got nothing. thanks. Not something I use so I am guessing, but it is worth a look. Hope that helps. That line is... carte blanche. "Any remote host" can issue RPC calls to the device. If you trust your environment to be knocked up tight behind unscalable firewall, then you're fine and it's convenient. No remote_hosts.cfg to maintain all your BOINC client IPs in. As for the password, far as I remember the password gui_rpc_auth.cfg file of 7.0.27 in the official repository is blank, same as all the Gianfranco builds. I have a suspicion something is broken there since longer as that was also with 6.10 on Linux, as putting a password in stops any attempt to connect remote or local, by BOINCmgr or boinccmd. Anyway we're straying way off the problem. P.P.L. needs to connect the boincmgr to the core client using localhost or 127.0.0.1. When that proposed entry is added to the remote_hosts.cfg [make sure to use sudo when editing] and client restarted boincmgr should be able to connect over the local IP and -not- over the LAN IP which is the issue [it does not do that by itself... the user did something]. Then, right bottom the boincmgr prints it's connected over... "Connected over localhost (7.0.27)" and no more constant router polling would happen. Guaranteed (as long as you don't remotely connect to that client ;>). Oh and yes, 'hosts' is a mostly forgotten but very useful system file to store fixed IP addresses... for instance, add WCG IP and things go a tad faster since it wont have to interrogate the ISP/Internet DNS service, and even when the DNS service is down or polluted I get to connect, if WCG is up and connected. The file is in a subdir of ../etc/.., something which Windows has in common with Linux [shock and horror]. Using it all the time, since about 1985. |

Hi SekeRob.
----------------------------------------Just to be sure my /etc/hosts file has these 2 lines plus some others to do with ipv6 use, I'll leave them out because I have disabled it. 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 ( my rigs name ) I will try and edit the / remote_hosts.cfg / file later. I really didn't do anything different when installing boinc this time just let synaptic do it's thing, maybe something in the Ubuntu ISO I used had changed it was a new copy that I downloaded to lessen the amount of updates it would do. thanks [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 22, 2013 7:48:00 AM] |
