Boinc 7.0.27 always using network / internet. [RESOLVED]

Hi.

I've never seen this problem before, I've had to reinstall my O.S. after some sort of bad
updates for Ubuntu 12.04lts last week Fubard my system. crying

Now after getting everything going again I installed Boinc 7.0.27 from synaptic same as before
but now Boinc is constantly hitting the modem/router with the internet light flashing every
few seconds, I'm sure it's Boinc because it's only doing it when Boinc is running.

And this is even with the network activity suspended?

It did not do this before with the same O.S. & Boinc set up?

Any ideas.

Re: Boinc 7.0.27 always using network / internet.

Hello P . P . L .,
This sounds a lot like the BOINC heartbeat. BOINC Manager and BOINC.exe communicate with each other using the inter-process communication stack (IP) that is also used by the internet. This allows manager software to communicate with other computers running BOINC.exe on the same network. It is very useful if you want to control several computers from just one console. Some firewalls show this as a steady annoying flicker on the firewall icon.

Not a problem. It is the way BOINC is designed.

Hi Lawrence.

Never had this before, if I pull the etho cable for that rig the internet light stops flicking, the
router side has never flickered even when connected it seems to be just the outgoing side to the web that is. confused

edit/ just to add- This flicker is happening about every 2 sec.

Can it be turned off in the manager / config file?

Hello P . P . L .,
If this is the heartbeat (the BOINC phrase) then it cannot be turned off. Try right-clicking on BOINC Manager, then Snooze for an experiment. The question is what has changed to cause your system to react? Have you added another computer on your local network?

No same as before, I just had to reinstall everything on this rig. crying

Isn't the heartbeat suppose to be 30sec apart not every 2sec that I'm seeing. confused

This is an ubuntu rig so there is no right click Snooze that I know of.

thanks.

Nope. The heartbeat has to be received within 30 seconds or everything shuts down. It beats regularly like a . . .

Why not ignore the flicker? I admit, I eventually changed my firewall when Zone Alarm kept flickering, but it was because of a problem with a Zone Alarm update.

Re: Boinc 7.0.27 always using network / internet.

Are you allowing other BOINC-clients to connect to this client, either by using remote_hosts.cfg or by <allow_remote_gui_rpc> in cc_config.xml, or possibly by a command-line-switch as you start BOINC-client? This is shown in the log when you starts BOINC, something like:

19.06.2013 12:51:54 | | Starting BOINC client version 7.1.17 for windows_x86_64

(snip)

19.06.2013 12:51:54 | | Config: don't use GPUs while hl2.exe is running
19.06.2013 12:51:54 | | Config: GUI RPCs allowed from:
19.06.2013 12:51:54 | | XXX
19.06.2013 12:51:54 | (Project-list)

Re: Boinc 7.0.27 always using network / internet.

Hi.

These are my start up messages. No remote allowed.

It not my firewall it's actual net traffic, I can see kb/s going in/out on net speed app.

Doesn't Boinc ping google at times to check it's self?

Could that be what's going on for some reason, could it be stuck.

Re: Boinc 7.0.27 always using network / internet.

kilobits per second is not tthe heartbeat. Unless you have something stuck in transfer, BOINC should not do that at all. Why not upgrade your Linux BOINC to the latest 7.0.xx version you can find? I am beginning to think that system utilities should be consulted, but I do not know what works on Ubuntu.

Re: Boinc 7.0.27 always using network / internet.

Hi Lawrence.

This starts from when I start Boinc in the morning, no other programs are doing this, like fire fox or my e-mail client. They do what they need to then the net activity stops, but not with this Boinc for some reason.

Guess I'll have to reinstall again after I use up all tasks I've got on here then get a newer version to see if that works.

edit / The only new version I can find is 7.0.65+dfsg-3~ubuntu12.04.1 but it says it's unstable so that might not be a good one.

Any one know were I can get a newer stable version that I can install with synaptic?
