That's a big number, so much so, that they maybe have to consider to disconnect from the public grid so the volunteer efforts can be relocated to other researches... down to earth, WCG sciences for instance ;>)

Re: Milky Way 2

It may have the world's top spot for compute power, but it also probably has the world's top spot for power consumption - 24 megawatts.
The TH-2 system will have a peak power consumption under load for the system of 17.8 megawatts. If cooling is added, the total power consumption 24 megawatts.

Glad I am not paying that electric bill. laughing
Cheers

Re: Milky Way 2

To realize how much electricity that is, I looked at my electric bill.

My electric rate (Xcel energy) is about 7 cents per KWH.

A system using 24MW would cost $1.2 million per month in electricity cost alone, assuming it is run 24/7.

0.07 X 24,000 kwh (24 megawatts) = $1680 per hour X 24 hours per day X 30 days per month = $1.2 million!

Edit: Added calulation

Re: Milky Way 2

.and then there's keeping it cool

Each of those Xeon's is ~£1500 list retail in the UK

I make the bill for the processors alone £368 million

LOL

http://www.top500.org/system/177999

Probably get a discount from Intel for more than a 1/4 Million CPU's

Grid computing has to be the future

Don't mention the Electricity Bill if it ran in the UK !!

Don't get me started wink

Aha, nothing to do with the BOINC project Milkyway. Another thread popped up on the topic: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,35264

Most of the power of the BOINC Milkyway project come from GPUs, so they can't be used on WCG at the moment.
