Please may I ask when/if there will be a version of BOINC which is an 'app', i.e. code to run on a mobile device ?
As most here will know, most of these devices are left on 24/7/365, many of the newer handsets are becoming multi-core, and the majority of them are vastly over-powered for what they do. It looks a no-brainer to me to get this out there, although there may be technical challenges to consider such as the size of transfers etc. WUs may have to be chopped into smaller pieces in order to process on devices with limited bandwidth and resources, but imagine the potential. I have seen a reference to an Android client however couldn't find the answer. |

But if you buy a Pad with Win8 (not RT), using an x86 CPU, there are "quite powerful" ones, you should be able to run usual Desktop applications. BOINC client should be run "fine"?
----------------------------------------EDIT: Just a consideration regarding such devices being powered on 24/7...it is because they have long stand-by hours...but those hours will be turned into minutes (or a best an hour) if you apply CPU load from WCG. So it means that the device must be plugged in constantly. ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by flodisar at Jun 10, 2013 2:58:54 PM] |

I'm not sure what reference you saw, but please read through this forum: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,29427
----------------------------------------WCG is looking into using such devices but what you need to understand is that it is up to the project scientists, not WCG, to develop the app or even choose to use them. In the mean time, perhaps attaching your mobile devices to one of the other projects outside WCG that DO already support them. You can get the Android compatible software here: www.nativeboinc.org or from the Google app store. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

There's a BOINC Android device client in testing now, but not to be had through usual channels [Think the Android versions thread over at Berkeley was even removed]. Since Google is the big backer, that's where you get it and for testing, you must enroll. The announcement [only by mail]:
Dear alpha testers: We have released a new version of BOINC (7.1.10) for testing. This release includes, for the first time, a version for Android devices (phones, tables, ultrabooks). If you have such a device, please help us test BOINC on it. We are distributing the Android version through the Google Play Store instead of the BOINC web site. To get the test version, you must first join a Google Group called "BOINC Android Testing". Instructions for doing this are here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/AlphaInstructions#Installingtestsoftware Currently only two listed projects (OProject and Asteroids@home) offer Android apps. You can also manually attach to the Einstein@home test project, http://albert.phys.uwm.edu/ This project provides images and icons that are shown in the Android GUI; the others do not. In addition to Android support, 7.1.10 has the following changes: * Fixed the translation issue where a project's total credit was not properly displayed in French. Please verify that you can see a project's total credit while the manager's language is configured for French, or any other language supported. * When changing any of the activity options in the 'activity menu, sometimes the menu would display incorrect settings. After making a change, quickly bring up the activity menu and verify that the settings are correct. Versions for the other platforms will be out in a day or two. Please report test results to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha and any bugs to boinc_alpha@ssl.berkeley.edu. Thanks in advance. ----- Rom As knreed mentioned some month ago, about 130 devices had attached to WCG. The more do, the more interesting it becomes. Since these devices are more social media directed, another avenue to spread interest and get those underutilized laptops/desktops also crunching [Hook, Line and sinker of course ;>] |

I thought OProject had the ALX app and it was stopped since it did nothing months ago. Are they still using it for these tests?

Since I didn't know, I asked google [who else ;O]: http://oproject.info/ . There's ARM mentioned as supported hardware... is that not Android running? Another question for the same source... https://www.google.it/search?q=android+on+arm+processor [You could get different results to what I get... always forced back to Google Italy, even if I put .com at the end: http://www.arm.com/community/software-enablem...-center-android/index.php ]

http://oproject.info/apps.php
----------------------------------------http://oproject.info/server_status.php But more importantly: http://oproject.info/forum_thread.php?id=137#1213 That is why I questioned it. I tried following the steps for Alpha testing and it doesn't currently work. The app link is invalid. There are multiple other projects with Android + Arm capable work. There are also Linux + Arm capable projects. More then posted above, so I'm wondering if the apps that work on nativeBOINC are the same for the Berkeley release or if they had to compile yet a third Arm capable app. (I'm also hoping Berkeley is making an Android + x86 capable app while they are at it) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
