Free software and extortion

I am tired of software that tries to extort money from you after one installs it on their computer. The software is suppose to be free but after executing it, it will tell you about some problems one has but to fix them one must purchase an advanced version of the software. In the first place I am not entirely sure that the software did not produce the so called problems. I compare this with a medical doctor giving free examines and than telling the patient that they have a problem. Than telling the patient for a $100 they will be informed on what the problem is and any known cures. One must be extremely careful with any download one accepts. Even upgrades to existing programs could be loaded with these so called free software.

Re: Free software and extortion

Some free software is wonderful and some is merely an advertisement to buy something else. Read the reviews and check as much as possible to make sure you know what you are getting. I have the luxury of having enough systems to install suspect software on a test system to see how it performs. If it is a dud, I just wipe it out. If it is so bad it corrupts my system or won't uninstall I simply wipe the OS and do a fresh reinstall of the OS. A royal pain the neck, but better safe than sorry. Caveat emptor even if it is free. If you do find a good program, support the developer(s).
Cheers

May be better to install Windows in a VM and record a snapshot of it so next time you install something you don't want you can just restore the snapshot. This way you don't have to keep reinstalling the OS

Well, it like when I take my car in. I have a rule...fix only the problem I agree to pay for. Anything else tell me about it and give me a price quote (and I will get a second opinion).

@Software Don't install any additional software that you don't know about! Browsers are bad for this and custom versions of browsers (ie. Yahoo).

So, know the software and know and trust the source (where you download the software from).

If it says FREE download--do NOT download because only the download is FREE!!--unless of course you are downloading LINUX!!
