Re: SekeRob - Question on WCG Charts & Progress Question

Now who wants to put salt in old festering wounds ;? No, the GANTT is permanent history in the public domain

LOL, I remembered the reasoning behind the pulling of that chart (i.e. people being unable to grasp that it was just an educated guesstimate based on available info and whinging when it was out by so much as a day.)

I couldn't resist a little leg pull about doing one for future projects, which by the nature of being complete unknowns would be much more subject to start date and end date error (and subsequent whinging) biggrin

P.S. I still have a copy of what was probably one of the last charts you published, in Jul 2010. It's interesting to look back on, a lot of the end dates extended by over a year, partly through new work being added to some of the projects and partly through new projects starting - and the crunching power devoted to those older projects reducing as a result.

Maybe figuring out start/end dates could be a future GPU project, could probably get it figured out just in time for the changes to come in ;)

Re: SekeRob - Question on WCG Charts & Progress Question

Well I don't think establishing start dates is too hard, even if some of the projects go in fits and starts. However, I am thinking the scientists who initiate the projects must have some preliminary idea of potential length of the project or the number of WU's required. I believe there has to be some indication in the application to IBM to run the project of the potential length of the project. This would, of course, be just the preliminary "estimate" subject to any number of changes during the course of the project(s). It would be nice to have a target even if it keeps moving.
Cheers

Re: SekeRob - Question on WCG Charts & Progress Question

The problem is that the "estimates" are more guesstimates as there are so many factors that influence them. Other projects starting/stopping, improvements in the calculation software, GPU computing, etc.

As Sek found out, giving dates to folks who couldn't understand that those dates were fundamentally impossible to guarantee was just giving them a stick to go beating him with.

I doubt the WCG tecs or project scientists would be any more willing to endure such undue and unfair criticism than Sek was.

OK, I see your point. It was just a thought, a mere musing.

Sekerob, are you going to cleanup WCG-ALL chart from completed projects?

thanks!
