Of SSD's and CEP2 Data

I have seen it written that a CEP2 wu can write maybe 24GB to disk during running (that may have been a combined read/write figure)

With sandforce drives being hindered by incompressible data I wonder if any of you fine folk would care to comment on the compressibility of the data written, from downloading to sending back the results and everything in between.

(Yes I am trying to decide which SSD to use ...Intel 520 or Samsung 840Pro

(4c8t 16G overclocked) for rig A and CEP2 on windows

(16c32t 32G stock) for rig B and probably a mix of Vina projects on linux)

Re: Of SSD's and CEP2 Data

I've been running CEP2 for at least a year on my Intel 320 series SSD 120gb.

The Intel SSD Toolbox states the drive health as "Good" with an life expectancy of 90% left.

I have a few sandforce controller SSD's too and they have also run without issue, although haven't checked their state of health recently.

Re: Of SSD's and CEP2 Data

I have been running an SSD on a six core processor for about 18months now. I have not seen any issues to date, although I would say that I only run 3-4 CEP2 work units at a time.

Out of interest, which program would you guys recommend to check on the health of my SSDs?

I thought that CEP2 read/writes 32GB per WU. Could be wrong. A teammate using CrystalDiskInfo said he had 300GB of read/writes in 12 hours. I don't think it's worth running CEP2 on SSDs and I only use regular HDDs and Linux for this project. JMHO

Re: Of SSD's and CEP2 Data

IIRC the story was that a member [cant remember if same] was measuring a lot more than what was written (read+write you say) and updated. Considering the model is 1-2GB in RAM mostly less, but only saving at checkpoint [16 max], and uploads are about 35MB ATM, it defeats logic to have a 300GB number coming out. Reads of course do not wear and if off SSD, substantially faster, particularly that 6700 input set. In the not so distant future we'll be having a new Q-Chem engine driving CEP2. Things could be different considering the various comments of the time CEP2 has run on efficiency, and inefficiency in certain areas.

Re: Of SSD's and CEP2 Data

Thanks Oldchap.
I'll try crystal info on my main rig, when I get home.

.

Out of complete interest are you also running your operating system from the same SSD as you are running CEP2 tasks from?

Re: Of SSD's and CEP2 Data

Thanks rvan. Over all has anybody noticed a faster turnaround time for tasks using a SSD as opposed to a standard IDE hard drive?
